What Toner Does the Brother HL-L3280CDW Use?
Last Updated:Quick answer: The Brother HL-L3280CDW uses TN229 standard or TN229XL high-yield toner in black, cyan, magenta and yellow, plus a separate DR229CL imaging drum.
One thing to get right before you order: there is no TN229XXL for the HL-L3280CDW. The super-high-yield XXL exists in the TN229 family, but Brother lists it only for certain models — the HL-L3295CDW, HL-L8245CDW, MFC-L3780CDW and MFC-L8395CDW. For this printer, TN229XL is the largest cartridge available.
Brother HL-L3280CDW supplies at a glance
| Consumable | Part Number | Black Yield | Color Yield (each) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Toner (in-box starter) | — | ~1,000 pages | ~1,000 pages |
| Toner (standard) | TN229BK / C / M / Y | 1,500 pages | 1,200 pages |
| Toner (high yield) | TN229XL | 3,000 pages | 2,300 pages |
| Imaging drum | DR229CL | ~20,000 pages | |
Yields are ISO/IEC 19798. Note the starter row: the cartridges that ship in the box are around 1,000 pages each, meaningfully less than a standard TN229, so your first set of replacements comes sooner than the spec sheet suggests.
TN229 or TN229XL?
For most owners, XL. It doubles the black yield and nearly doubles color for well under double the price, and on a four-color machine that means fewer occasions where a single empty color stops the printer.
The case for standard TN229 is cash flow: replacing all four colors at once is a real expense, and if the printer is lightly used you may prefer smaller, cheaper cartridges.
The drum is a separate part — and a separate cost
The DR229CL is rated for roughly 20,000 pages, so you will go through several sets of toner before it needs replacing. Two practical consequences:
- "Replace Drum Soon" is not a request for toner. Buying toner in response to that message will not clear it.
- The drum counter must be reset manually from the control panel after fitting a new drum, or the warning keeps coming back.
The upside is diagnostic clarity: when print quality degrades you can tell whether toner or drum is at fault, instead of replacing one expensive combined cartridge and hoping.
Castle Ink recommendation
Castle Ink stocks compatible TN229 toner as four-color sets, which is how a color laser is normally restocked:
- Brother TN229XL High-Yield Toner — Black & Color 4-Pack
- Brother TN229 Standard Toner — Black & Color 4-Pack

How to replace the toner
- Open the front cover and pull the drum and toner assembly out as one unit by its green handle.
- Push down the green lock lever next to the color you are changing and lift that cartridge out of the drum.
- Unbox the new cartridge, rock it gently side to side five or six times, and remove the protective cover.
- Slide it into the matching color-keyed slot until it clicks and the lever lifts on its own.
- Slide each of the four green corona-wire tabs fully left and right a few times, then return every tab to its home position.
- Reinstall the assembly and close the front cover.
Troubleshooting an HL-L3280CDW
- Vertical streaks or a repeating colored line. Clean the corona wires first. A tab left out of its home position is the most common cause and produces a distinct stripe.
- Color looks off or misaligned. Run color calibration and color registration from the control panel. Four-color lasers drift; this is routine maintenance, not a fault.
- "Replace Toner" on a cartridge that still feels heavy. Brother counts pages rather than measuring toner. Reseating can clear a premature warning, and Continue Mode lets you keep printing past the empty message.
- "Replace Drum Soon." That is the DR229CL. Order a drum and remember to reset the counter after fitting it.
- Wi-Fi drops. This model is dual-band. If your router publishes one SSID across both bands, pinning the printer to 2.4 GHz usually stabilizes it — though unlike some Brother models, this one does have Gigabit Ethernet if you would rather go wired.
- Third-party toner concerns. Allegations in March 2025 that Brother firmware degrades third-party toner behavior were publicly denied by Brother and never independently established. Some owners disable automatic firmware updates as a precaution; that is a hedge, not a documented necessity.
Which printers use TN229 toner?
- HL-L3220CDW, HL-L3280CDW, HL-L3295CDW, HL-L3300CDW
- HL-L8245CDW, MFC-L8395CDW
- MFC-L3720CDW, MFC-L3765CDW, MFC-L3780CDW
All share the DR229CL drum. Remember that TN229XXL is offered only on some of these — not on the HL-L3280CDW. If you also run an MFC-L3780CDW, that model does take XXL.
Genuine Brother vs compatible TN229
There is no enrollment lock, no subscription requirement and no HP+-style commitment on this printer. Brother's EcoPro plan is entirely optional.
What a good compatible buys you is a correctly made chip and reset gear, proper toner particle size, and even fill across all four colors. On a color laser this matters more than on a mono machine: a weak cyan tints every page. Buying a matched four-cartridge set from one supplier gives more consistent color than mixing brands one cartridge at a time.
About the Brother HL-L3280CDW itself
The HL-L3280CDW is a color laser printer only — no scanner, copier or fax. It prints 27 pages per minute in both mono and color, duplexes automatically, and offers Gigabit Ethernet, dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4 and 5 GHz), Wi-Fi Direct and USB 2.0.
Announced in October 2023 alongside the rest of the TN229 range, it is a current model with full support and easily available supplies. If you need scanning or an ADF, the MFC models in the same family use identical toner.
FAQ
What toner does the Brother HL-L3280CDW use?
TN229 standard or TN229XL high-yield toner in black, cyan, magenta and yellow, plus a DR229CL drum unit.
Can I use TN229XXL in an HL-L3280CDW?
No. Brother does not list XXL for this model. TN229XL is the highest yield available for it.
Can I use TN227 or TN223 instead?
No. Those belong to the earlier HL-L3210CW / L3270CDW generation and are not interchangeable with TN229.
Is the drum included with the toner?
No. The DR229CL is separate and lasts roughly 20,000 pages — several sets of toner.
Why did my first set of toner run out so fast?
The in-box cartridges are starter cartridges rated at about 1,000 pages each, less than a standard TN229.
Does Brother firmware block compatible toner?
Brother says it does not. The 2025 claims to the contrary were denied and never corroborated. Most real-world failures trace to cartridge build quality rather than any lockout.
