How to Print Stickers at Home: Sticker Paper, Vinyl, Settings and Cutting

To print stickers at home, design them in an app like Canva, Cricut Design Space or Word, load printable sticker paper made for your printer type (inkjet or laser), set the paper type to Glossy Photo or Matte Photo at High quality, and print. Let the ink dry for 10 to 15 minutes, add a clear laminate sheet if you want them water-resistant, then cut them out with scissors or a cutting machine.

What you need

  • A printer. Any inkjet or laser works. Inkjets give the best color on glossy sticker paper.
  • Sticker paper matched to your printer (see below).
  • A design app: Canva, Cricut Design Space, Silhouette Studio, Word or Google Docs.
  • A way to cut: scissors, a craft knife, or a Cricut or Silhouette machine.
  • Optional: clear self-adhesive laminate sheets for water and scratch resistance.

Match the paper to your printer. Inkjet sticker paper has a coating that absorbs ink. Laser sticker paper is built to survive the fuser's heat. Using the wrong one can smear or even damage a laser printer. Browse inkjet printable vinyl sticker paper on Amazon.

How to print stickers step by step

  1. Design at the right size. Place designs on a Letter-size page with at least 1/8 inch between them. Use 300 DPI images for sharp results. See Printer DPI explained.
  2. Add a white border or offset around each design if you're cutting by hand. It hides small cutting mistakes.
  3. Print a test on plain paper to check sizing and colors.
  4. Load one sheet of sticker paper, printable side facing the correct way. Use the rear tray if your printer has one.
  5. Set the paper type. Choose Glossy Photo Paper for glossy sticker paper and vinyl, or Matte Photo Paper for matte. Set quality to High or Best.
  6. Set scaling to 100% / Actual size, especially for Cricut or Silhouette cut files.
  7. Print, then let it dry for 10 to 15 minutes before touching. Vinyl takes longer than paper.

How to make stickers water-resistant

  • Laminate them. Apply a clear self-adhesive laminate sheet over the printed page before cutting. This is the single biggest improvement.
  • Use vinyl, not paper. Paper stickers soften when wet even with laminate.
  • Pigment ink holds up better than dye ink against water and fading. See Pigment vs. dye ink.
  • Hand-wash only. Home-printed stickers generally aren't dishwasher-safe.

How to cut your stickers

  • Scissors or a craft knife: fine for simple shapes and small batches.
  • Cricut Print Then Cut: Design Space adds registration marks, you print the page, and the machine reads the marks and cuts around each design. The printable area is limited (Cricut lists about 6.75 x 9.25 inches on Letter paper), so plan layouts to fit.
  • Silhouette Print & Cut: works the same way with Silhouette Studio.
  • Kiss cut vs. die cut: a kiss cut goes through the sticker but not the backing (a sticker sheet). A die cut goes through both (individual stickers).

Cricut not reading the marks? Print on matte paper or put laminate on after cutting, since glossy surfaces reflect the sensor light. Also turn off any "fit to page" scaling.

Common questions

Can I print stickers on a regular printer?

Yes. Any home inkjet or laser printer can print stickers on the matching sticker paper. No special printer is needed.

Why are my stickers smudging?

Usually the paper type setting is wrong or the ink hasn't dried. Pick Glossy Photo for glossy sheets and let them sit. Using inkjet ink on laser sticker paper also causes smearing. See Why is my printer ink smudging?

Do stickers use a lot of ink?
