Quick answer: The Canon PIXMA MX340 uses two cartridges: a PG-210 black and a CL-211 tri-color. The high-yield PG-210XL and CL-211XL versions fit too. Castle Ink stocks remanufactured PG-210XL Black, CL-211XL Color and a combo pack.

The MX340 takes the same cartridges as the PIXMA MP280, MP250 and MP480. In the UK and Europe the same printer uses PG-510/CL-511 or PG-512/CL-513, which are region-coded and won't work in a U.S. model. Each cartridge has its own print head built in.

How Do I Replace the Ink in the Canon PIXMA MX340?

  1. With the printer on, lift the scanning unit until it locks open. The cartridge holder moves into the replacement position.
  2. Pinch the tabs to open the ink cartridge locking cover and lift out the empty cartridge.
  3. Unpack the new cartridge and remove the orange protective tape. Don't touch the electrical contacts or the nozzles.
  4. Put it in the correct slot (color on the left, black on the right) and press the locking cover down until it clicks.
  5. Close the scanning unit and wait for the automatic cleaning to finish. Run a print head alignment if lines look off.

What do errors U051 and U052 mean?

The printer can't find or recognize a cartridge. Open the scanning unit, reseat the cartridge, press the locking cover until it clicks and wipe the contacts. If the error stays, the cartridge may be damaged.

What do U162 and U163 mean?

Ink is out, or the printer can't track the level, which is common after a refill. Hold Stop/Reset for at least five seconds to turn off ink-level detection for that cartridge and keep printing.

Can I print with just the black cartridge?

You can keep printing when the color runs low, but both cartridges must stay installed. The printer won't print with a slot empty.

Will PG-510 or PG-240 cartridges fit?

No. PG-510/CL-511 are the European versions and PG-240/CL-241 are a different family. Either one brings up a not-compatible or not-recognized error.
