What Ink Does the Canon PIXMA MX410 Use?

Quick answer: The Canon PIXMA MX410 uses two cartridges: a PG-210 black and a CL-211 tri-color. The high-yield PG-210XL and CL-211XL versions fit too. Castle Ink stocks remanufactured PG-210XL Black, CL-211XL Color and a combo pack.

The MX410 and MX420 are the last MX4xx models on PG-210/CL-211. Later ones such as the MX452 and MX492 use different cartridges. The MX410 shares its ink with the MP280 and MP480. European versions take PG-510/CL-511, which won't work in a U.S. printer.

How Do I Replace the Ink in the Canon PIXMA MX410?

  1. With the printer on, lift the scanning unit until it locks open. The cartridge holder moves into the replacement position.
  2. Pinch the tabs to open the ink cartridge locking cover and lift out the empty cartridge.
  3. Unpack the new cartridge and remove the orange protective tape. Don't touch the electrical contacts or the nozzles.
  4. Put it in the correct slot (color on the left, black on the right) and press the locking cover down until it clicks.
  5. Close the scanning unit and wait for the automatic cleaning to finish. Run a print head alignment if lines look off.

What PIXMA MX410 owners ask

These are the questions that come up most for this printer in Canon's support community and owner reviews, answered in our words.

What does error U051 mean?

The printer can't find a cartridge. Open the scanning unit, reseat the cartridge, press the locking cover until it clicks and wipe the contacts. If it keeps coming back, the cartridge may be damaged.

It warns that the ink level can't be detected.

That's common after a refill. Hold Stop/Reset for at least five seconds to turn off ink-level detection for that cartridge and keep printing. The printer won't warn you about low ink after that.

What does U140 mean?

The cartridge isn't compatible, usually a European PG-510/CL-511 or a cartridge for another model. Install PG-210 and CL-211 instead.

Can I scan straight to a USB flash drive?

Yes. The MX410 has a USB port on the front for saving scans and received faxes to a flash drive.

PIXMA MX410 quirks worth knowing

  • Canon rates it at 8.7 ISO pages a minute in black and 5.0 in color, and a borderless 4x6 photo in about 42 seconds.
  • The 30-sheet document feeder takes legal-size originals but scans one side only.
  • There's no automatic two-sided printing. In that 2011 lineup, only the MX882 had it.
  • It connects by Wi-Fi or USB, with no Ethernet port.
