What Ink Does the Canon PIXMA TR4722 Use?
Last Updated:Correction (October 2026): an earlier version of this guide said you reach the cartridges by lifting the scanner and that black goes on the left. On the TR4722 you open the front paper output cover, and black goes in the right slot. We have also replaced retailer page yields with Canon's own figures.
Quick answer: The Canon PIXMA TR4722 uses a PG-275 pigment black cartridge and a CL-276 dye tri-color cartridge. The high-yield PG-275XL and CL-276XL fit the same slots and are the sensible choice for a printer with a fax and a document feeder attached to it.
Be careful with listings that pair the TR4722 with PG-245/CL-246 — that is the older TR4520's ink. The TR4720 and TR4722 moved to the 275/276 family and the two are not interchangeable.

Why XL matters more on the TR4722 than on a basic PIXMA
The TR4722 is built to do office-ish work at home: it has a 20-sheet automatic document feeder, automatic two-sided printing, and a 33.6 kbps fax modem. All three of those encourage multi-page jobs — scanning a stack of receipts, faxing a signed form, printing a duplexed report. A standard black cartridge, rated by Canon at 100 to 180 pages, disappears fast under that kind of use.
Fax reception is the one people forget. An incoming fax prints automatically, so a printer left on with a low black cartridge can empty itself overnight without you touching it. If you actually use the fax line, keep a spare PG-275XL on the shelf.
How to replace the ink in a PIXMA TR4722
- Leave the printer switched on. Open the front cover, then the paper output tray, then the paper output cover. The cartridge holder moves to the replacement position on its own.
- Push down the lock lever of the cartridge you are removing and take it out. Color goes in the left slot, black in the right.
- Take the new cartridge out of its packaging and pull the orange tape away. Never touch the gold contacts or the copper nozzle plate underneath.
- Insert the cartridge straight into its slot until it reaches the back, then push the lock lever up until it clicks.
- Close the paper output tray. Let the printer finish its initialization — it takes about a minute — and print the alignment sheet when prompted.
Troubleshooting TR4722 ink problems
- "Cartridge cannot be recognized" (support code 1682). Canon's own community forums have several threads specific to the TR4720/TR4722 on this. Clean the gold contacts with a dry lint-free cloth, reseat the cartridge firmly, and power the printer fully off and on. If a brand-new cartridge still will not read, exchange it.
- Ink level cannot be detected (codes 1686 / 1688). Hold Stop for five or more seconds to continue. Ink-level tracking for that cartridge is disabled from then on, which is normal on refilled and compatible cartridges.
- Codes 1401 / 1403. A cartridge is missing, not clicked in, or from the wrong family. Check that you have 275/276 and not 245/246.
- Faxes print blank or faded. Most incoming faxes are black text, so a dead black cartridge means blank or faded pages even when color is full. Replace the PG-275XL and reprint from fax memory.
- Banding after a cartridge change. Run one deep cleaning, then print the nozzle check pattern. The print head lives inside the cartridge on this model, so persistent gaps mean a faulty cartridge rather than a clogged printer.

TR4722 quirks worth knowing
- Unlike most PIXMAs, the cartridges are not under the scanner. You reach them through the paper output cover at the front.
- Cartridges go straight in and lock with a lever you push up until it clicks. To remove one, push its lock lever down.
- Color faxes go out at a lower resolution than black ones: Canon lists 200 x 200 dpi for color against 300 x 300 dpi extra-fine for black.
