What Ink Does the Epson Expression Home XP-420 Use?
Last Updated:Correction (October 2026): an earlier version of this guide said Epson 220 also fits the WorkForce WF-2830, WF-2850 and WF-3720 and the Expression Home XP-330 and XP-430. It does not. Epson 220 fits the WF-2630, WF-2650, WF-2660, WF-2750, WF-2760, XP-320, XP-420 and XP-424; the XP-330 and XP-430 take Epson 288.
Quick answer: The Epson Expression Home XP-420 uses Epson 220 ink in four separate cartridges: black, cyan, magenta and yellow. The high-yield Epson 220XL Black prints about 500 pages and each 220XL color about 450 pages, roughly three times the standard cartridges.

The same Epson 220 / 220XL cartridges fit the WorkForce WF-2630, WF-2650, WF-2660, WF-2750 and WF-2760, and the Expression Home XP-320, XP-420 and XP-424. The similar-looking XP-330 and XP-430 take Epson 288, not 220.
The Expression Home XP-420 is a compact wireless all-in-one for home printing, scanning and copying, with a 2.5-inch color touchscreen. Its four separate cartridges mean you only replace the color that runs out.
Do not confuse Epson 220 with Epson 252 or Epson 288. They look similar on the shelf but use different chips and shapes.
How to Replace the Ink in the Epson Expression Home XP-420
- Turn the printer on and lift the scanner unit. The cartridge holder moves to the replacement position.
- Shake the new cartridge gently four or five times, then unwrap it and remove the yellow tape (do not touch the green chip).
- Squeeze the tab on the empty cartridge and lift it straight out.
- Press the new cartridge down into its matching color slot until it clicks.
- Lower the scanner unit and press the start or OK button if the screen asks. The printer charges the ink for a minute or two.
Troubleshooting Tips
"Ink cartridge cannot be recognized": Lift the scanner, press the cartridge down until it clicks, and check that the yellow tape is fully removed. If it still is not recognized, remove and reinstall all the cartridges, then restart the printer.
Streaks or missing lines: Run a nozzle check and head cleaning from the printer's Maintenance or Setup menu. Epson printheads are permanent, so cleaning is worth trying two or three times, letting the printer rest a few minutes between cycles.
Firmware updates: Some Epson firmware updates have blocked third-party cartridges. Turn off automatic firmware updates in the printer's settings or Epson Connect, and see printer firmware updates and third-party ink.
What Expression Home XP-420 owners ask
These are the questions that come up most for this printer on retailer Q&A pages, Epson's support pages and owner reviews, answered in our words.
AirPrint says "Paper Configuration" is disabled. How do I fix it?
Turn on the Paper Configuration setting on the printer itself. Epson's status-message guide says AirPrint needs it switched on.
The screen says "Printer error. Turn power off and on again." What now?
Epson treats this as a serious error. Turn the printer off and on, check for jammed paper, and contact Epson if the message comes back.
The screen warns about the ink pads. Can I replace them myself?
No. The waste ink pads are not user-replaceable. When they reach the end of their service life the printer stops and needs Epson service.
Can I print photos straight from a memory card?
Yes. The XP-420 has a built-in memory card slot, so you can print without a computer.
What replaced the XP-420?
It is discontinued, and Epson points buyers to the Expression Home XP-4200.
Expression Home XP-420 quirks worth knowing
- Unusually for a printer in its class, it is run from a 2.5-inch color touch panel rather than buttons.
- The XP-420 and XP-424 are essentially the same printer: Epson uses one status-message guide for both, and both take Epson 220.
- It has no document feeder and no fax, and Epson doesn't list automatic two-sided printing.
- It connects by USB, Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi Direct and supports AirPrint and Epson Connect, and it takes paper up to 8.5 × 44 inches.

Four: Epson 220 black, cyan, magenta and yellow.
Does the XP-420 use the same ink as the XP-320 and XP-424?
Yes. All of them use Epson 220 and 220XL cartridges.
Can I mix standard 220 and 220XL cartridges?
