What Ink Does the Epson WorkForce WF-2650 Use?
Last Updated:Correction (October 2026): an earlier version of this guide said Epson 220 also fits the WorkForce WF-2830, WF-2850 and WF-3720 and the Expression Home XP-330 and XP-430. It does not. Epson 220 fits the WF-2630, WF-2650, WF-2660, WF-2750, WF-2760, XP-320, XP-420 and XP-424; the XP-330 and XP-430 take Epson 288.
Quick answer: The Epson WorkForce WF-2650 uses Epson 220 ink in four separate cartridges: black, cyan, magenta and yellow. The high-yield Epson 220XL Black prints about 500 pages and each 220XL color about 450 pages, roughly three times the standard cartridges.

The same Epson 220 / 220XL cartridges fit the WorkForce WF-2630, WF-2650, WF-2660, WF-2750 and WF-2760, and the Expression Home XP-320, XP-420 and XP-424. The similar-looking XP-330 and XP-430 take Epson 288, not 220.
The WorkForce WF-2650 is a compact wireless all-in-one with print, scan, copy and fax, a 30-sheet document feeder and automatic two-sided printing. Its four separate cartridges mean you only replace the color that runs out.
Do not confuse Epson 220 with Epson 252 or Epson 288. They look similar on the shelf but use different chips and shapes.
How to Replace the Ink in the Epson WorkForce WF-2650
- Turn the printer on and lift the scanner unit. The cartridge holder moves to the replacement position.
- Shake the new cartridge gently four or five times, then unwrap it and remove the yellow tape (do not touch the green chip).
- Squeeze the tab on the empty cartridge and lift it straight out.
- Press the new cartridge down into its matching color slot until it clicks.
- Lower the scanner unit and press the start or OK button if the screen asks. The printer charges the ink for a minute or two.
Troubleshooting Tips
"Ink cartridge cannot be recognized": Lift the scanner, press the cartridge down until it clicks, and check that the yellow tape is fully removed. If it still is not recognized, remove and reinstall all the cartridges, then restart the printer.
Streaks or missing lines: Run a nozzle check and head cleaning from the printer's Maintenance or Setup menu. Epson printheads are permanent, so cleaning is worth trying two or three times, letting the printer rest a few minutes between cycles.
Firmware updates: Some Epson firmware updates have blocked third-party cartridges. Turn off automatic firmware updates in the printer's settings or Epson Connect, and see printer firmware updates and third-party ink.
What WorkForce WF-2650 owners ask
These are the questions that come up most for this printer on retailer Q&A pages, Epson's support pages and owner reviews, answered in our words.
Is the document feeder 30 or 50 sheets?
30. Epson's own WF-2650 page says 50 pages in its overview but 30 sheets in the spec table. Go by the spec table.
Does it print on both sides automatically?
Yes. Epson rates automatic two-sided printing at 6.5 ISO pages per minute in black and 4.5 in color.
My Mac says the printer is offline on Wi-Fi. What should I try?
Epson suggests printing a nozzle check to confirm the printer itself works, clearing the print queue, then removing and re-adding the printer in macOS. If that fails, restart the router or reinstall the Epson software.
The screen says the ink pads are nearing the end of their service life. Can I keep printing?
For now, yes: press OK to continue. Once the pads reach end of life the printer stops, and the pads are not user-replaceable, so Epson service is needed.
Can it send color faxes?
Yes. It faxes in black and white and color at 33.6 Kbps, with up to 100 pages of memory and 60 speed dials.
WorkForce WF-2650 quirks worth knowing
- The WF-2650 is the step-up from the WF-2630: same Epson 220 ink, but it adds automatic two-sided printing and a 150-sheet paper tray instead of 100.
- It accepts paper up to 47.2 inches long as a user-defined size, so it can print banners.
- There is no Ethernet port. It connects by USB 2.0, Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g/n) or Wi-Fi Direct.
- If a firmware update fails, the screen shows Recovery mode. Epson says to connect the printer to a computer by USB cable and run the update again.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many ink cartridges does the Epson WorkForce WF-2650 use?
Four: Epson 220 black, cyan, magenta and yellow.
Does the WF-2650 use the same ink as the WF-2630?
Yes. Both use Epson 220 and 220XL cartridges.
Can I mix standard 220 and 220XL cartridges?
Yes. They fit the same slots and can be mixed freely.
Does using remanufactured ink void my Epson warranty?
No. The U.S. Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act stops Epson from voiding your warranty just because you used third-party ink.
