What Ink Does the Epson WorkForce WF-2950 Use?
Last Updated:Correction (October 2026): an earlier version of this guide overstated the Epson 232 yields and said the WF-2950 prints two-sided only manually and can't print in black when a color runs out. Epson rates 232 at about 150 pages black and 140 per color (232XL black about 380), and the WF-2950 has automatic two-sided printing and a temporary black-only mode.
The Epson WorkForce WF-2950 uses Epson 232 and Epson 232XL ink cartridges — four separate tanks. As with the rest of this family, the XL is offered in black only; cyan, magenta and yellow come in standard yield.

We don't sell Epson 232 or 232XL cartridges, so we can't recommend one of our own for the WF-2950. Earlier versions of this page suggested we did, and that was wrong.
Our advice is to buy genuine Epson. The best value is Epson's combo pack of a 232XL black with standard 232 cyan, magenta and yellow (T232XL-BCS, about 380 pages black and 140 per color). If you print little color, add a spare 232XL black (T232XL120-S) rather than a second full set. Epson's product page warns that damage caused by non-genuine ink isn't covered by the printer's limited warranty, and Epson firmware updates can stop non-Epson cartridges from being recognized.

The ADF is what separates the WF-2950 from the WF-2930, and it shifts ink consumption noticeably: feeding stacks of documents through for copying burns black far faster than colour. A 232XL black with standard colours is the right combination here, and it is worth keeping a second XL black in the drawer rather than a full colour set.

How to Replace the Ink in the Epson WorkForce WF-2950
- Turn the printer on — the carriage will not move to the access position if it is powered off.
- Open the cartridge access door and wait for the carriage to slide to the centre and stop.
- Press down on the release tab on the old cartridge, then lift it out.
- Unwrap the new cartridge and peel off the yellow tape. Do not touch the green chip on the side.
- Drop the new cartridge into its slot and press down on the top until it clicks firmly into place.
- Close the door and let the printer run its ink charging cycle. Do not power it off part-way through.
Troubleshooting the Epson WorkForce WF-2950
ADF grabbing two sheets at once. The WF-2950 feeder is sensitive to curled paper. Fan the stack and square it before loading.
A colour cartridge runs out. You don't have to stop. The WF-2950 has a temporary black-only mode for plain paper and envelopes; how to use it is in the owner questions below.
Print quality drops off after the printer sits unused. Print one colour page every couple of weeks. It costs almost nothing and it keeps the nozzles from drying, which is far cheaper than the deep cleaning cycles required to recover them.
The ink gauge reads low on a brand-new cartridge. Ink level reporting is an estimate, and on compatible cartridges it can read low, unknown, or not at all. Judge by print quality, not by the gauge.

A color cartridge is empty. Can I keep printing in black?
Yes, for a while. Epson lets the WF-2950 print with black ink only on plain paper or envelopes, with borderless printing turned off. On Windows this needs Epson Status Monitor; on a Mac, choose "Permit temporary black printing" when the printer asks.
Does the WF-2950 print double-sided automatically?
Yes. Epson lists automatic two-sided printing for the WF-2950.
How much paper can I load, and can it print on legal?
The rear feeder holds 100 sheets of letter or A4 plain paper. Legal-size paper has to go in one sheet at a time.
Can I print from my phone without a router?
Yes. Wi-Fi Direct lets up to 8 devices connect straight to the printer.
The document feeder won't pull my originals in.
Epson's FAQ points to curled or creased originals, overloading the feeder and a dirty feeder as the usual causes. Flatten the pages, load fewer at a time and clean the feeder.
WF-2950 quirks worth knowing
- The printhead is built into the printer, not the cartridges. Epson designs it to last the life of the printer, and the 232 cartridges hold Claria dye ink.
- Epson's ratings for the 232 family are low: about 150 pages for black, 140 for each color and 380 for 232XL black. There is no XL color cartridge.
- The temporary black-only mode isn't available on Windows 10 in S mode.
- RTINGS says the WF-2950 replaced the WF-2850 and is very similar in design, but the two take different cartridges (232 here, 212 in the WF-2850).
