Our advice is to buy genuine Epson. Epson labels this printer for Epson cartridges only, and its product page warns that damage caused by non-genuine ink isn't covered by the printer's limited warranty. The best value is Epson's combo pack of a 232XL black with standard 232 cyan, magenta and yellow (T232XL-BCS, about 380 pages black and 140 per color). If you print little color, add a spare 232XL black (T232XL120-S) rather than a second full set.

Quick answer: what ink does the Epson Expression Home XP-4205 use?

The Epson Expression Home XP-4205 uses four Epson 232 Claria cartridges: black, cyan, magenta, and yellow. Epson also makes a high-capacity 232XL black, but there is no XL version of the 232 color cartridges, so colors always use the standard size.

Is there a 232XL color cartridge?

No. Epson only offers 232XL in black. Listings that advertise “232XL color” are usually standard-capacity colors bundled with an XL black, or third-party cartridges with non-Epson ratings. Check the rated page yield before you buy.

Should I buy the 232XL black?

What other printers use Epson 232 ink?

Epson 232 cartridges also fit the Expression Home XP-4200, WorkForce WF-2930, and WF-2950.

Is Epson 232 the same as Epson 212?

Can I use non-Epson 232 cartridges in the XP-4205?

Epson labels the XP-4205 for Epson cartridges only and says damage caused by non-genuine ink isn't covered by the printer's limited warranty. Using third-party ink doesn't void the warranty itself, but Epson won't cover damage it attributes to that ink. How do I replace the ink in the XP-4205?

Turn the printer on and lift the scanner unit. When the carriage stops, squeeze the tab on the empty cartridge and lift it out. Shake the new cartridge gently, remove only the yellow tape, and press it in until it clicks. Close the scanner unit and let the printer charge the ink. Why won't the XP-4205 recognize a cartridge?

Why are my prints faded or missing a color?

Can I keep printing when one cartridge is empty?

Sometimes, for a short while. The XP-4200 series User's Guide, which covers the XP-4205, has a section on continuing to print temporarily without replacing ink cartridges. All four cartridges still have to be installed.

Why does my color ink run down when I print only black?

Epson says all four inks are used for printing and for maintenance on this printer family, and all four must be installed for it to work.

It keeps reporting torn paper inside after I cleared a jam.

Owners of the XP-4200, the same printer, report this too. Check the paper path again for scraps and power-cycle the printer. If the message won't clear, contact Epson support, as it may be a hardware fault.

Does it use a maintenance box?

Yes. Epson lists ink maintenance box C9344 for the XP-4200, the same printer.
