Should I buy standard or XL cartridges for the XP-3100?

Can I mix standard and XL cartridges?
Yes. Each cartridge is read independently, so any mix of standard and XL from your region's family works (603 with 603XL, or 212 with 212XL). Many people run an XL black with standard colors.
Is Epson 212 the same as Epson 220 or 232?
No. Epson 220 (WorkForce WF-2750/WF-2760) and Epson 232 (XP-4200/XP-4205) are different cartridges with different shapes and chips. They won't seat in a 212 printer.
Do third-party cartridges work in the XP-3100?
Sometimes, but with more risk than on many printers. Epson says the XP-3100 is designed to work only with genuine Epson cartridges, and its firmware updates can stop non-Epson cartridges from being recognized. Owners of the near-identical XP-3150 report compatible 603XL cartridges being rejected partway through printing. How do I replace the ink in the XP-3100?
Turn the printer on and lift the scanner unit. When the carriage stops, squeeze the tab on the empty cartridge and lift it out. Shake the new cartridge gently four or five times, remove only the yellow tape, and press it into its slot until it clicks. Close the scanner unit and let the printer charge the ink (about a minute). Why won't the XP-3100 recognize a cartridge?
Reseat the cartridge firmly until it clicks, make sure the yellow tape is fully removed, and wipe the chip with a dry lint-free cloth. Power the printer off for a minute. If you bought U.S. Epson 212 cartridges for a UK, European or Australian XP-3100, region coding may be the cause. Can the XP-3100 print if a color cartridge is empty?
Usually not. Epson printers stop printing when any cartridge is expended. On some models and drivers you can temporarily print in black only on plain paper, but plan to replace the empty color soon. Keeping a spare black on hand avoids most downtime.
Why are my prints faded, streaky, or missing a color?
Run a nozzle check from the printer's Maintenance menu, then a head cleaning (up to two or three cycles, with a short rest between them). - The screen is a 1.44-inch color LCD, not a touchscreen, even though one Epson Australia page mentions a "touch panel".
- Epson says it is designed to work only with genuine Epson cartridges, and Epson's firmware FAQ for the sister XP-4105 says non-Epson cartridges may stop working after an update.
- Older spec sheets list Google Cloud Print, but Google has shut that service down. Use AirPrint, Mopria, Wi-Fi Direct or Epson iPrint instead.
