What Ink Does the Epson XP-5200 Use?

Quick answer: The Epson Expression Home XP-5200 uses four Epson 222 Claria cartridges: black, cyan, magenta and yellow. High-yield 222XL comes in black only. It does not take the Epson 202 cartridges from the older XP-5100, and it has no photo-black cartridge.

What Ink Cartridges Does the Epson XP-5200 Take?

Cartridge Epson part no. Approx. yield Price (Oct 14, 2026)
222 Black T222120-S ~210 pages $22.99 (Epson)
222XL Black T222XL120-S ~550 pages $39.99 (Staples)
222 Cyan T222220-S ~185 pages $10.99 (Epson)

Yields are Epson's ISO figures. Staples also sells a 222 4-pack (T222120-BCS) for $55.95 and an XL-black-plus-colors combo (T222XL-BCS) for $72.95. Outside the U.S. the XP-5200 takes different numbers, such as 503 in Australia, so buy for the region your printer came from.

Is 222XL Worth It?

For black, yes: 222XL prints about 550 pages against 210 for the standard cartridge, so its cost per page is roughly 7.3¢ against 10.9¢. There's no XL color, which is the XP-5200's weak point: the standard colors work out to about 6¢ per page each. If you print a lot, an ink-tank printer like the EcoTank ET-2980 is far cheaper to run.

Third-party ink. Epson says the XP-5200 is designed for Epson cartridges only, and owners report "cartridge not recognized" errors on non-Epson cartridges after firmware updates. If you try compatibles, leave automatic firmware updates off.

How Do I Replace the Ink in the Epson XP-5200?

  1. Press the Home button and select Maintenance > Ink Cartridge(s) Replacement > Start.
  2. Lift the scanner unit.
  3. Squeeze the tab on the empty cartridge and lift it out.
  4. Shake a new black cartridge four or five times (don't shake the colors), then peel off only the yellow tape.
  5. Press the cartridge down until it clicks, lower the scanner unit, select Completed, and leave the printer on while it charges the ink.

Which Other Printers Use Epson 222?

The Epson WorkForce WF-2960 uses the same Epson 222 cartridges. The older XP-5100 and WF-2860 use Epson 202, which doesn't fit the XP-5200.
