What Ink Does the Epson Expression Premium XP-640 Use?

Correction (October 2026): an earlier version of this guide said Epson 410 also fits the XP-970, XP-6000 and XP-6100. It does not: the XP-970 takes Epson 277, and the XP-6000 and XP-6100 use different cartridges. It also described Epson's 410XL combo pack as five XL cartridges; Epson's T410XL-BCS pairs an XL black with standard photo black, cyan, magenta and yellow.

Quick answer: The Epson Expression Premium XP-640 uses Epson 410 ink in five separate cartridges: black, photo black, cyan, magenta and yellow. The high-yield Epson 410XL 5-pack gives the lowest cost per page.

Discontinued. Epson lists the Expression Premium XP-6100 as the U.S. replacement, but it takes different ink. Epson 410 cartridges are still sold, including our remanufactured 410XL 5-pack.

The same Epson 410 / 410XL cartridges fit the Expression Premium XP-530, XP-630, XP-640, XP-7100 and XP-830. The XP-970 takes Epson 277, and the XP-6000 and XP-6100 use different cartridges.

The Expression Premium XP-640 is a small-in-one photo printer with print, scan and copy, borderless photo printing and a CD/DVD printing tray. The extra photo black cartridge gives deeper blacks in photos.

Do not confuse Epson 410 with Epson 277 (used by the XP-970) or Epson 212. They fit other Expression models and will not work in the XP-640.

How to Replace the Ink in the Epson Expression Premium XP-640

  1. Turn the printer on and lift the scanner unit. The cartridge holder moves to the replacement position.
  2. Shake the new cartridge gently four or five times, then unwrap it and remove the yellow tape (do not touch the green chip).
  3. Squeeze the tab on the empty cartridge and lift it straight out.
  4. Press the new cartridge down into its matching color slot until it clicks.
  5. Lower the scanner unit and press the start or OK button if the screen asks. The printer charges the ink for a minute or two.

Troubleshooting Tips

"Ink cartridge cannot be recognized": Lift the scanner, press the cartridge down until it clicks, and check that the yellow tape is fully removed. If it still is not recognized, remove and reinstall all the cartridges, then restart the printer.

Streaks or missing lines: Run a nozzle check and head cleaning from the printer's Maintenance or Setup menu. Epson printheads are permanent, so cleaning is worth trying two or three times, letting the printer rest a few minutes between cycles.

Firmware updates: Some Epson firmware updates have blocked third-party cartridges. Turn off automatic firmware updates in the printer's settings or Epson Connect, and see printer firmware updates and third-party ink.

What Expression Premium XP-640 owners ask

These are the questions that come up most for this printer on retailer Q&A pages, Epson's support pages and owner reviews, answered in our words.

Can it print on CDs and DVDs?

Yes. It prints directly onto inkjet-printable discs using the disc tray that comes with it.

Is there a separate tray for photo paper?

Yes. A 20-sheet photo tray sits alongside the 100-sheet main tray, so photo paper can stay loaded.

Does it print on both sides automatically?

Yes. Epson rates automatic two-sided printing at 5.5 ISO pages per minute in black and 4.5 in color.

Can I print photos without a computer?

Yes. It has an SD card slot, a USB port for flash drives and PictBridge for printing straight from a camera.

What replaced the XP-640, and does it take the same ink?

Epson lists the Expression Premium XP-6100 as the replacement in the U.S. It uses different ink, so your 410 cartridges won't carry over.

Expression Premium XP-640 quirks worth knowing

  • Epson's own 410XL combo pack (T410XL-BCS) is not five XL cartridges. It pairs an XL black with standard-capacity photo black, cyan, magenta and yellow. Our remanufactured 410XL 5-pack is a different product.
  • Epson publishes very different photo black yields in different places (Epson Canada lists about 2,100 standard and 4,200 XL, while retailers list about 300 and 650), so we don't quote one.
  • In draft mode it prints a borderless 4 × 6 photo in about 20 seconds.
  • It has a 2.7-inch touch panel and connects by USB, Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi Direct; there is no Ethernet port.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many ink cartridges does the XP-640 use?
Five: Epson 410 black, photo black, cyan, magenta and yellow.

What is the photo black cartridge for?
The printer uses photo black for photos on glossy paper and the regular black for text on plain paper. Both must be installed.

Can I mix 410 and 410XL cartridges?
Yes. They fit the same slots.

Does using third-party ink void my Epson warranty?
No. The U.S. Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act stops Epson from voiding your warranty just because you used third-party ink.

Same ink, other models: the Expression Premium XP-630 also uses Epson 410 and 410XL cartridges.
