The cartridges that ship in the box are setup cartridges, so the first replacement comes sooner than many owners expect. HP doesn't publish U.S. setup yields for the 6958; in Europe it rates the 6950's setup cartridges at about 265 pages black and 310 color, against about 750 for each 902XL.
Firmware and Non-HP Chip Warnings
HP ships firmware on this generation that can reject cartridges whose chip it does not recognise — a policy HP calls dynamic security. A cartridge that worked last month can start throwing a "Non-HP chip detected" or "Supply Problem" message after an automatic update, with no other change.

How to Replace the Ink in the HP OfficeJet 6958
- Turn the printer on — the carriage will not move to the access position if it is powered off.
- Open the cartridge access door and wait for the carriage to slide to the centre and stop.
- Press down on the old cartridge to release it, then pull it toward you and out.
- Unwrap the new cartridge and peel off the protective tape. Do not touch the copper contacts or the nozzle plate.
- Slide the new cartridge into its slot at a slight upward angle and press until it clicks firmly into place.
- Close the door and let the printer run its alignment page. Skipping alignment is the most common cause of banding people blame on the cartridge.
Troubleshooting the HP OfficeJet 6958
Print quality drops off after the printer sits unused. Print one colour page every couple of weeks. It costs almost nothing and it keeps the nozzles from drying, which is far cheaper than the deep cleaning cycles required to recover them.
The ink gauge reads low on a brand-new cartridge. Ink level reporting is an estimate, and on compatible cartridges it can read low, unknown, or not at all. Judge by print quality, not by the gauge.

Yes. HP now rates the 902XL black and each 902XL color at about 750 pages. The standard 902 colors are rated at about 315.

No. The 35-sheet document feeder scans one side only, even though printing is automatically two-sided.
Will it connect to a 5 GHz Wi-Fi network?
No. HP's datasheet for the 6950 platform lists 802.11b/g/n on 2.4 GHz only.
How much does it cost to run?
Consumer Reports estimates about $119 a year in ink, with text pages at 4.2 cents and graphics pages at 15.3 cents using HP cartridges.
Can I still buy a 6958 new?
Not from HP. HP's product page says the printer has been discontinued, and Consumer Reports lists it as limited distribution.

- The 6958 is a U.S. retail version of the OfficeJet 6950, and the 6950 is on the model list in HP's dynamic-security settlement with Euroconsumers. Plan on non-HP chips being rejected.
- Two-sided printing runs at up to 8 ppm black and 5 ppm color, about half its single-sided ISO speed of 16 and 9 ppm.
- HP rates the platform for up to 15,000 pages a month but recommends 200 to 800. Past that, a bigger office printer makes more sense.
- HP's current 750-page rating for the 902XL black was measured in an OfficeJet Pro 6860, not the 6958. Older listings still quote 825.
