What Ink Does the HP OfficeJet Pro 6830 Use?
Last Updated:Quick answer: the HP OfficeJet Pro 6830 uses HP 934 black and HP 935 cyan, magenta and yellow, or the high-yield 934XL and 935XL. Four individual pigment cartridges.
The trap here is numeric. HP 932 and 933 do not fit this printer, and they are still sold, so a shopper can pick up the wrong box and it will not look like a mistake at checkout. HP 932/933 belongs to the OfficeJet 6100, 6600, 6700, 7110, 7510 and 7610. HP 934/935 belongs to the OfficeJet 6812, 6815, 6820 and OfficeJet Pro 6230, 6830 and 6835. There is no compatibility between the two families.

Those are HP's own ISO figures, and they appear identically on HP's store and on HP's spec sheet for this printer. The XL step is substantial — two and a half times the black, roughly double the colors.
Worth knowing while you shop: HP itself no longer sells the standard 934 black or the individual standard 935 colors on its US store. The XL tier is effectively the only tier HP still lists.
The Dynamic Security question, and the fix HP publishes
This is the most useful thing on this page. The OfficeJet Pro 6830 is on HP's own published list of printers affected by Dynamic Security — the feature that blocks cartridges using a non-HP chip and produces a "Cartridge Problem" error.
The good news is that HP also publishes a firmware update that removes the Dynamic Security feature, and it is available specifically for the printers on that list, this one included. HP surfaces it on the 6830's own support page. Three conditions have to hold: your printer is on HP's list, you are using an aftermarket supply with a non-HP chip, and you are seeing a cartridge error.

A small-office all-in-one: print, scan, copy and fax at 18 ISO ppm black and 10 ppm color, with automatic duplex printing and a 35-sheet ADF. Input is 225 sheets, the display is a 2.65-inch color touchscreen, and connectivity covers USB, Ethernet, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi and a fax line. HP rates it for 200 to 800 pages a month.
HP has replaced it — its store now points to a newer model — but ink remains widely available and the machine shares its cartridges with the OfficeJet 6812, 6815, 6820 and OfficeJet Pro 6230 and 6835.
Common problems on this model
"Problem with the printhead", error 0xc19a0020 or 0xc19a0003
By far the dominant failure on this family, and the important structural fact is that the printhead is a separate part from the cartridges on these machines. Before assuming the printer is finished: remove the printhead, clean the electrical contacts on both the printhead and the carriage with a lint-free cloth and distilled water, let them dry fully, reseat, then hard-reset by unplugging at the wall for 60 seconds. That clears a meaningful share of these errors.
"Cartridge problem" with third-party ink
This is Dynamic Security rather than a faulty cartridge. Reseat first, then look at HP's firmware update described above.
Black or color not printing
Run a printhead cleaning from the touchscreen, then print a nozzle check before running a second cycle. Two cleanings is the sensible limit — each one uses ink. See faded or streaky prints.
"The print carriage cannot move"
