What Ink Does the HP OfficeJet Pro 6230 Use?

The mistake to avoid is HP 932 and 933. Both families are still on sale, the numbers sit right next to each other, and nothing at checkout will warn you. HP 932/933 fits the OfficeJet 6100, 6600, 6700, 7110, 7510 and 7610. HP 934/935 fits the OfficeJet 6812, 6815, 6820 and OfficeJet Pro 6230, 6830 and 6835. They do not interchange.

Dynamic Security, and the fix HP publishes
The OfficeJet Pro 6230 appears on HP's own published list of printers affected by Dynamic Security, the feature that blocks cartridges with a non-HP chip and shows a "Cartridge Problem" error.
It also appears on the list of printers for which HP publishes a firmware update that removes Dynamic Security. That update exists only for the models on that list, and this is one of them. Three things have to be true for it to apply: your printer is on HP's list, you are using an aftermarket supply with a non-HP chip, and you are getting a cartridge error.

About the HP OfficeJet Pro 6230
This one surprises people: the 6230 is print only. No scanner, no copier, no fax. It is a compact network printer built to sit quietly and produce documents, and it has a button-and-LED control panel rather than a screen.
Speeds are 18 ISO ppm black and 10 ppm color, with automatic duplex printing as standard, a 225-sheet input tray, USB, Ethernet and 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi. HP rates it for 200 to 800 pages a month. It is discontinued, but it shares its ink with the OfficeJet 6812, 6815, 6820 and OfficeJet Pro 6830 and 6835, so supply is not a problem.

The dominant failure on this family. The key fact is that the printhead is a separate part from the cartridges here, so a printhead error is not a cartridge fault. Remove the printhead, clean the contacts on both it and the carriage with a lint-free cloth and distilled water, dry fully, reseat, then unplug at the wall for 60 seconds. That clears a real share of them.
"Cartridge problem" with third-party ink
Dynamic Security rather than a defective cartridge. Reseat first; if it persists, HP's firmware update above is the documented route.
Black or color not printing
Run one printhead cleaning, print a nozzle check, and only then consider a second. Each cleaning consumes ink and a third rarely fixes what the second did not. See faded or streaky prints.
No screen, so errors are hard to read
With only lights and buttons, this printer signals faults through blink patterns. Install HP Smart or the full driver package on a connected computer — the software translates the light codes into plain messages, which saves a great deal of guesswork on this model specifically.
