What Toner Does the Xerox C315 Use?

Quick answer: The Xerox C315 uses four toner cartridges in two sizes. The high-capacity set is 006R04364 black (about 8,000 pages) and 006R04365 cyan, 006R04366 magenta and 006R04367 yellow (about 5,500 pages each). The standard set is 006R04356 black (about 3,000 pages) and 006R04357, 006R04358 and 006R04359 color (about 2,000 pages each).

These are the North American and European part numbers, and the C315 shares them with the print-only Xerox C310. The newer C325 takes different toner. Castle Ink sells compatible high-capacity cartridges in all four colors.

What Does C315 Toner Cost per Page?

On November 2, 2026, 4inkjets listed Xerox's high-capacity 006R04364 black at $225.99 and each high-capacity color at $243.99, and the Xerox store listed the 006R04364 at $253.99: about 2.8¢ to 3.2¢ a page for black and 4.4¢ per color, or roughly 16¢ for a full-color page. The standard 006R04356 black was $136.99 at the Xerox store and $155.83 at LD Products, about 4.6¢ to 5.2¢ a page. Our compatible high-capacity cartridges are $79.95 each: about 1¢ a page for black, 1.5¢ per color and about 5.4¢ for a full-color page.

Will Compatible Toner Work?

Yes, with one caveat. The C315 reads a chip on every cartridge, and Xerox's support article for fault codes 32.40 to 32.43 lists a non-Xerox cartridge as one cause of an "Unsupported Toner" message, alongside metered cartridges, starter cartridges moved from another printer and defective cartridges. Compatible cartridges carry their own chips made to be read by the C310 and C315, and ours are sold for both. If a 32.4x message appears after a swap, take the cartridge out, make sure all tape and packing are off, and reseat it; if the message stays, the seller should replace the cartridge. Because a firmware update can change which chips a printer accepts, it is worth checking with your toner seller before installing a major firmware update.

How Do I Replace the Toner in the Xerox C315?

  1. Make sure the printer is not printing or copying.
  2. Open door B on the front of the printer.
  3. Pull the empty toner cartridge straight out of its color slot.
  4. Unpack the new cartridge and remove all tape and packing material.
  5. Slide the new cartridge into the matching color slot and press until it locks into place.
  6. Close door B; the printer reads the new cartridge and returns to Ready.

Which Other Printers Use Xerox 006R04364?

Only the Xerox C310 color printer and the Xerox C315 color multifunction printer, including their C310/DNI and C315/DNI versions, take the 006R04356 to 006R04359 and 006R04364 to 006R04367 toner. The 008R13325 waste toner bottle is also used by the C320, C325, C410 and C415, but their toner cartridges are different.

What does "Unsupported Toner" or fault code 32.4x mean?

The printer did not accept the cartridge chip. Xerox lists four causes: a non-Xerox cartridge, a metered cartridge the firmware does not support, a starter cartridge taken from another printer (shown as 32.4xD), or a defective cartridge. Reseat the cartridge with all tape removed first; for metered cartridges, Xerox says to update the firmware.

What is the difference between Use & Return and Return Optional toner?

Xerox sells the C315 cartridges under two programs. The 006R04356 to 006R04367 cartridges are Use & Return, meaning you agree to send the empty back to Xerox; Return Optional versions use different part numbers and cost more, such as the 006R04405 black at $298.99 against $253.99 for the 006R04364 at the Xerox store on November 2, 2026. Compatible cartridges are not part of either program.

Do I need to replace a drum?

Not often. The imaging kit is rated at about 125,000 pages. Xerox sells a black-only kit (013R00689) and a black-and-color kit (013R00692); when you fit the black-only kit, you move the cyan, magenta and yellow developer units over from the old kit. The waste toner bottle (008R13325) is rated at about 25,000 pages.

How long do the cartridges in the box last?

The C315 ships with starter cartridges rated at about 1,500 pages for black and 1,000 pages for each color, per Xerox's specification sheet.
