What Ink Does the Epson Expression Premium XP-610 Use?

Quick answer: The Epson Expression Premium XP-610 uses five Epson 273 Claria Premium cartridges: black, photo black, cyan, magenta and yellow. The high-capacity Epson 273XL versions fit too. Castle Ink stocks remanufactured 273XL Black, Photo Black, Cyan, Magenta and Yellow.

The XP-610 takes the same ink as the XP-620 and XP-820. In the UK and Europe the same printer takes Epson 33 cartridges, which won't fit a U.S. model, and the newer Epson 410 cartridges from the XP-6100 don't fit either.

Discontinued and end of support. Epson launched the XP-610 in 2013 at $149.99 and names the Expression Premium XP-6100, which takes different ink, as its replacement. Epson 273 cartridges are still sold.

How Do I Replace the Ink in the Epson XP-610?

  1. Turn the printer on, or start Ink Cartridge Replacement from the Setup, Maintenance menu on the screen.
  2. Raise the scanner unit and wait for the print head to move to the replacement position.
  3. Squeeze the tab on the empty cartridge and lift it out.
  4. Shake the new cartridge gently, unpack it and peel off only the yellow tape, without touching the chip.
  5. Press it in until it clicks, close the scanner unit and let the ink charge.

What XP-610 owners ask

These are the questions that come up most for this printer in Epson's support pages, retailer reviews and owner forums, answered in our words.

Can I print in black if a color is empty?

No. Owners report the XP-610 stops printing when any of its five cartridges, including photo black, is empty. Keep a spare set.

It says it can't recognize my cartridges.

Press each cartridge in firmly until it clicks and wipe the chip with a damp lint-free cloth. Firmware updates can block some third-party chips.

Does it have a document feeder or fax?

No. It prints, copies and scans with a flatbed scanner only.

What does 'ink pad at end of service life' mean?

The pads that soak up waste ink are full. Epson offers a pad replacement service, but on a printer that's past end of support, replacing the printer is often cheaper.

XP-610 quirks worth knowing

  • Epson rates it at 13 ISO pages a minute in black and 10 in color.
  • It prints two-sided automatically and has a 100-sheet tray plus a separate 20-sheet photo tray.
  • It prints directly on inkjet-printable CDs and DVDs and has SD card slots and a front USB port.
  • The 2.5-inch screen isn't a touchscreen.
