What Ink Does the HP DeskJet D4360 Use?
Last Updated:Quick answer: The HP DeskJet D4360 uses two cartridges: an HP 74 black and an HP 75 tri-color. The high-yield HP 74XL and 75XL fit too, and an optional HP 99 photo cartridge can stand in for the black. Castle Ink stocks remanufactured 74XL Black, 75XL Tri-color, 74 Black, 75 Tri-color, HP 99 Photo and a 74XL + 75XL combo pack.
It takes the same ink as the Photosmart C4280, C4480 and C5280. HP's own D4360 datasheet lists the HP 99 photo cartridge as an option. The U.S. model (CB700A) takes HP 74 and 75. Units sold outside the U.S. may use different cartridge numbers, so check your manual before buying.

Discontinued. HP announced the DeskJet D4360 in June 2008 at $69. HP's store page says it has been discontinued and points to the OfficeJet Pro 8210 as the newer model. HP's own 74 and 75 cartridges are often out of stock or backordered at Staples, Walmart and 4inkjets.

Yields are current retailer figures. HP's 2008 datasheet gave lower numbers (about 170, 635, 165 and 505 pages). The HP 99 goes in the black slot, so you swap it in by hand for photos. HP's own HP 99 is discontinued.
Is HP 74XL Worth It?
Yes. The 74XL black prints almost four times as many pages as the standard 74, and the 75XL about three times as many as the 75. On October 17, 2026, Staples listed HP's 74 black at $33.89 (about 17¢ a page) and the 75 tri-color at $39.69 (about 23¢ a page), out of stock. 4inkjets had HP's 74XL at $56.99 (about 7.6¢ a page) and 75XL at $89.99 (about 17¢ a page), both backordered. Our remanufactured 74XL black is $13.99 (about 1.9¢ a page) and the 75XL tri-color $19.95 (about 3.8¢ a page), or $22.99 for the 74XL + 75XL combo pack. That combo costs less than our standard 74 black ($12.95) and 75 tri-color ($16.95) bought separately.
How Do I Replace the Ink in the HP DeskJet D4360?
- Turn the printer on, load plain paper and open the printer cover. Wait for the carriage to move to the center.
- Push the old cartridge down slightly and slide it out of its slot.
- Unwrap the new cartridge and pull off the plastic tape. Don't touch the copper contacts or nozzles, and don't remove the copper strip.
- Slide the cartridge in at a slight upward angle until it snaps into place: tri-color on the left, black or HP 99 photo on the right.
- Close the cover and print the alignment page when the printer asks.
Which Other Printers Use HP 74 and 75?
Retailer compatibility lists include the Photosmart C4280, C4480, C4384 and C5280, and the OfficeJet J5725, J5735, J5740, J5750, J5780 and J5790. Check your printer's manual before buying.
What DeskJet D4360 owners ask
These are the questions that come up most for this printer in HP's user guide and driver sites, answered in our words.
The Print Cartridge Status light is flashing.
The black or photo cartridge needs attention. Take it out, gently clean the copper contacts and nozzle area, and put it back. If the light keeps flashing, replace the cartridge. A solid light just means the ink is low.
The Resume light is flashing.
There's a paper jam or the carriage has stalled, often because a cartridge isn't seated right. Clear the jam, take out and reinstall both cartridges (tri-color on the left), then press Resume. If the Power and Resume lights both flash, turn the printer off and on again.
It only prints in gray, or colors are missing.
The printer is in ink-backup mode because one cartridge is missing or has failed. Install both cartridges to get out of it. HP doesn't recommend running on the photo cartridge alone.
Is there a Windows 11 driver?
Driver sites list support up to Windows 10 and older Mac OS X versions. We couldn't confirm whether Windows 11's built-in driver works with it.
DeskJet D4360 quirks worth knowing
- HP claimed up to 30 pages a minute in black and 23 in color. Those are draft-mode figures, not ISO speeds, so real pages come out slower.
- It's print-only and has no screen. It connects by USB, with a front USB port for printing straight from a camera.
- Two-sided printing is manual: the printer prompts you to reload the pages.
- The fold-up tray holds 80 sheets. It prints borderless photos up to 4x6 and panoramas, and HP rates it for up to 3,000 pages a month.
