Last Updated:Quick answer: The HP DeskJet F380 All-in-One uses two cartridges: an HP 21 black and an HP 22 tri-color. For photos you can swap the black for an optional HP 58 photo cartridge. Castle Ink stocks remanufactured HP 21 Black, HP 22 Tri-color, a 21 + 22 combo pack and the HP 58 Photo.
It takes the same black and tri-color as the DeskJet F4180, the DeskJet 3940 and the rest of the F300 series. In Europe the HP 58 is sold as C6658AE, and the high-yield 21XL and 22XL were sold as C9351CE and C9352CE. We couldn't confirm U.S. XL part numbers.

HP's launch release calls the HP 58 an optional upgrade to six-ink printing; it goes in the black slot. Sellers rate it at about 125 photos. The XL cartridges are listed in Europe and Asia-Pacific only.
Is HP 21XL Worth It?
We couldn't find a U.S. 21XL or 22XL, so the choice is between HP's standard cartridges and remanufactured ones. On October 17, 2026, Staples listed HP's 21 black at $31.89 (about 16.8¢ a page) and the 22 tri-color at $48.99 (about 29.7¢ a page), out of stock for delivery. 4inkjets listed HP's 58 photo at $39.99, backordered. Our remanufactured HP 21 black is $11.99 (about 6.3¢ a page), the HP 22 tri-color $16.99 (about 10.3¢ a page) and the HP 58 photo $19.95, or $26.99 for the 21 + 22 combo pack.
How Do I Replace the Ink in the HP DeskJet F380?
- Turn the F380 on and open the print cartridge door. Wait for the carriage to move to the center and stop.
- Press down on the old cartridge and pull it out of its slot.
- Unwrap the new cartridge, hold it by the black plastic, and pull off the pink tape. Don't touch the copper contacts or nozzles.
- Slide it into the empty slot (tri-color on the left; black, or the HP 58 photo, on the right) and push it forward until it clicks.
- Close the door. With plain paper loaded, let the printer print its alignment page.

What DeskJet F380 owners ask
These are the questions that come up most for this printer in HP's support community and owner reviews, answered in our words.
Does the F380 take a photo cartridge?
Yes. HP sold the HP 58 photo cartridge (C6658AN) as an optional upgrade to six-ink printing. It goes in place of the black cartridge.
Why does it still say paper jam after I removed the paper?
Clear jammed paper from the rear or the tray, not the front, and check for scraps near the paper sensor. If the computer still shows a jam, delete the printer in Windows and add it again.
It shows offline even though it's plugged in.
Owners report this, especially on Windows Vista. Reinstall the driver and plug the USB cable straight into the computer rather than a hub.
Can it copy without a computer, or fax?
It copies from its control panel, up to 9 copies at a time. It can't fax, and it has no Wi-Fi, network port or memory card slot.
DeskJet F380 quirks worth knowing
- HP rated it at up to 20 pages a minute in black and 14 in color, in draft mode. Computerwoche found it very slow, taking almost two minutes for a letter page.
- There's no display, just buttons and status lights. Computerwoche noted it has no power switch.
- It holds 100 sheets in a fold-up tray and prints borderless 4x6 photos. Sources disagree on its scan resolution.
- Computerwoche saw a red cast in prints and put running costs at about 7 euro cents a page for black and 9.4 for color.
