What Ink Does the HP DeskJet F4180 Use?

Quick answer: The HP DeskJet F4180 uses two cartridges: an HP 21 black and an HP 22 tri-color. The high-yield HP 21XL and 22XL fit too. Castle Ink stocks remanufactured HP 21 Black, HP 22 Tri-color and a 21 + 22 combo pack.

It shares HP 21 and 22 with a long list of 2000s DeskJets, including the F2180, F4135, F4140 and D1360. Don't confuse it with the DeskJet F4280, which takes HP 60. Staples and some ink sellers also list the larger HP 57 tri-color and HP 58 photo for the F4180, but HP's own spec sheet lists only HP 21 and 22.

What DeskJet F4180 owners ask

These are the questions that come up most for this printer in HP's support community and owner reviews, answered in our words.

Blinking lights usually mean a cartridge problem or a paper jam. Clear any jam, reseat or replace the cartridge the printer flags, and turn it off and on again.

It won't recognize a refilled cartridge.

Clean the copper contacts with a lint-free cloth and reseat the cartridge. Refilled HP 21 and 22 cartridges often keep reporting low or empty.

No. It has buttons and lights only and connects by USB.

Why is the ink so expensive per page?

Standard HP 21 and 22 cartridges only print about 190 and 165 pages. XL or remanufactured cartridges bring the cost down.
