Last Updated:Shopping for this printer? See all HP 63 Ink Cartridges – 63 & 63XL → Ships same day by 4 PM ET, 1-year guarantee.
Quick answer: The HP OfficeJet 5222 uses HP 63 black and tri-color cartridges: HP 63 black (F6U62AN, about 170 pages) and tri-color (F6U61AN, about 150), or the high-yield HP 63XL black (F6U64AN, about 430) and tri-color (F6U63AN, about 300). HP's newer HP 63/65 cartridges fit too.
It does not use HP 62, even though the HP 62-based OfficeJet 5740 has a similar name. The European version of this printer takes HP 302. Castle Ink sells remanufactured HP 63XL black and tri-color, plus a 2-pack.

What Does OfficeJet 5222 Ink Cost per Page?
On November 2, 2026, Staples listed HP's older 63XL black (F6U64AN) at $46.99, about 10.9¢ a page, and the new 63/65XL black (B7RT5AN) at the same $46.99 for about 300 pages, roughly 15.7¢ a page. The 63/65 tri-color (B7RT2AN) was $26.99 for about 100 pages, 27¢ a page, and the B87FDAN 2-pack was $74.49. Our remanufactured 63XL black is $23.49 (about 5.5¢ a page), our 63XL tri-color is $24.49 (about 8.2¢ a page), and the 2-pack is $45.95.
HP's new 63/65 line has no XL tri-color, so the older-style 63XL tri-color, about 300 pages, remains the high-yield color option.
Will Remanufactured Ink Work?
Yes, with one caveat. HP says the OfficeJet 5200 series uses dynamic security: it blocks cartridges with modified or non-HP chips, and firmware updates may block cartridges that worked before. Cartridges that keep the original HP chip, like our remanufactured 63XL, are the ones that work, and turning off automatic firmware updates in HP Smart is a sensible precaution. The 5222 is not an HP+ "e" model, so there is no HP+ lock to worry about.
How Do I Replace the Ink in the HP OfficeJet 5222?
- Turn the printer on and open the front ink-cartridge access door. Wait for the carriage to slide to the center and stop.
- Press down on the cartridge you are replacing to release it, then pull it forward and out. Black sits on the right, tri-color on the left.
- Unpack the new cartridge and pull the orange tab to remove the protective tape. Do not touch the copper contacts or the ink nozzles.
- Slide the cartridge into its slot at a slight upward angle and push it until it clicks into place.
- Close the access door and print the alignment page if the printer asks.
These are the standard steps for this type of printer. If your model's door label shows a different order, follow the label.
Which Other Printers Use HP 63?
The rest of the OfficeJet 5200 series (5212, 5252, 5255, 5258 and 5260) takes HP 63, as do the OfficeJet 3830 and 4650 series, the ENVY 4520 series and the DeskJet 1112, 2130 and 3630 series. Since HP merged the 63 and 65 lines in 2026, HP 63/65 cartridges also fit former HP 65 printers. HP 62 printers such as the OfficeJet 5740 and ENVY 5540 do not share ink with the 5222.
What OfficeJet 5222 owners ask
These are the questions that come up most for this printer on retailer Q&A pages, HP's support forum and owner reviews, answered in our words.
HP 63 cartridges are getting hard to find. What do I buy now?
HP's replacement is the HP 63/65 line: B7RT5AN (63/65XL black, about 300 pages), B7RT2AN (63/65 tri-color, about 100 pages) or the B87FDAN 2-pack. Staples lists the OfficeJet 5222 for them, and our remanufactured 63XL cartridges still fit.
Why does it keep dropping off Wi-Fi?
One owner review reports the printer losing its wireless connection every 15 minutes or so. Moving it closer to the router and reserving its IP address in the router settings are the usual first steps; reconnecting through HP Smart helps if the connection was set up from the website and never finished.
Push-button scanning will not set up. What else can I do?
An owner reports scan-to-computer from the printer's button failing even after several setup attempts. Scanning from the HP Smart app on the computer or phone avoids that setup step entirely.
My cartridges stopped working after an update. Why?
HP's dynamic security can block cartridges with non-HP chips after a firmware update, even if they worked before. Cartridges that keep an original HP chip are the safer choice.
OfficeJet 5222 quirks worth knowing
- The 5200 series pairs a 35-sheet document feeder, fax and automatic two-sided printing with budget HP 63 cartridges.
- HP rates the series at up to 10 pages per minute black and 7 color (ISO), so long jobs are slow.
- HP Instant Ink versions of HP 63 (E5Z02A black, E5Z01A tri-color) are physically larger, and owners of 5200-series printers report fit and cartridge-jam complaints with oversized cartridges.
- The European equivalents take HP 302, so a cartridge bought abroad may not fit.
