Quick answer: The HP OfficeJet J4580 All-in-One uses two cartridges: HP 901 or 901XL black and HP 901 tri-color. The 901XL black is rated for about 700 pages and the tri-color for about 360. Castle Ink stocks remanufactured 901XL Black, 901 Black and 901 Tri-color.

There is no 901XL tri-color. HP only made the XL in black, so the standard 901 tri-color (CC656AN) is the only color cartridge for this printer. Each cartridge has its printhead built in, so a fresh cartridge also gives you fresh nozzles.

What Ink Cartridges Does the HP OfficeJet J4580 Take?

Cartridge	HP part no.	Approx. yield	Castle Ink option
HP 901XL Black (high yield)	CC654AN	~700 pages	Remanufactured 901XL Black
HP 901 Black (standard)	CC653AN	~200 pages	Remanufactured 901 Black
HP 901 Tri-color	CC656AN	~360 pages	Remanufactured 901 Tri-color

Yields are HP's estimates. For printing checks, Castle Ink also carries a 901XL MICR black made with magnetic ink.

Is 901XL Black Worth It?

Yes, easily. HP rates the 901XL at about three and a half times the pages of the standard 901 black, and our remanufactured 901XL costs the same $17.95 as our standard 901. That works out to about 2.6¢ a page for black. Original HP 901XL black was $45.39 at Walmart on October 12, 2026 (and out of stock), about 6.5¢ a page. Our 901 tri-color is $20.95, about 5.8¢ a page.

How Do I Replace the Ink in the HP OfficeJet J4580?

Turn the printer on and open the front access door. Wait for the carriage to stop moving.
Press down on the cartridge to release it, then pull it out of its slot. Tri-color goes on the left, black on the right.
Unpack the new 901 cartridge and pull off the protective tape. Don't touch the copper contacts or the nozzles.
Slide the cartridge into its slot until it clicks into place, then close the door.
The printer prints an alignment page. Place it face down on the scanner glass and press OK to finish alignment.

Which Other Printers Use HP 901?

The OfficeJet 4500 (G510 series), the OfficeJet J4500, J4524, J4535, J4540, J4550 and J4585, and the networked OfficeJet J4624, J4660 and J4680 all use the same HP 901 cartridges.

What OfficeJet J4580 owners ask

These are the questions that come up most for this printer on retailer Q&A pages, manufacturer support communities and owner reviews, answered in our words.

Is there a 901XL color cartridge?

No. The XL size exists only for black. The color cartridge is the standard 901 tri-color, CC656AN.

How do I fix "Print Cartridge Problem: Tri-Color"?

Remove the tri-color cartridge, wipe its copper contacts and the matching contacts in the carriage with a lint-free cloth, and reseat it. If the message stays with a known-good cartridge, the carriage contacts are the likely cause. More fixes in printer says ink cartridge not recognized.

Does the J4580 have Wi-Fi?

No. HP's datasheet lists only a USB 2.0 connection. The J4680 is the networked version of this printer and uses the same ink.

Do the J4680 and OfficeJet 4500 use the same ink?

Yes. HP 901 and 901XL fit the whole J4500/J4600 family and the OfficeJet 4500.

How do I align new cartridges?

After a cartridge change the printer prints an alignment page. Put it face down on the scanner glass and press OK; the printer scans it and adjusts itself.
