What Ink Does the HP OfficeJet Pro 9015 Use?
Last Updated:Correction (October 2026): an earlier version of this guide said any compatible HP 962XL cartridge works in the non-e OfficeJet Pro 9015. HP's own datasheet says the 9015 is a dynamic-security printer meant for cartridges with HP chips, so cartridges with non-HP chips can be rejected.
Quick answer: The HP OfficeJet Pro 9015 uses HP 962 Black, Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow ink cartridges. For a much lower cost per page, choose the HP 962XL high-yield versions — they deliver roughly 2x the pages of standard HP 962 cartridges and are the best value for any home office or small business.

The HP OfficeJet Pro 9015 takes one black plus three individual color cartridges (cyan, magenta, yellow) — so you only replace the color you run out of, not the entire color set. The same HP 962 / 962XL family also fits the HP OfficeJet Pro 9010, 9012, 9015e, 9018, 9020, 9022, and 9025 series. The 9015 (no "e") doesn't require HP+, but it is still a dynamic-security printer. HP's datasheet says it is intended for cartridges with HP electronics, so cartridges with non-HP chips can be rejected now or after a firmware update. How to Replace Ink in the HP OfficeJet Pro 9015
- Power the printer on and open the front ink-cartridge access door — the carriage will move to the center.
- Press down on the old cartridge to release it, then pull it straight up and out.
- Unwrap the new cartridge and remove the orange protective cap. Do not touch the gold contacts or ink nozzles.
- Slide the new cartridge into the slot that matches its color label until it clicks into place.
- Close the access door. The printer will automatically run an alignment page — keep it for reference.
Troubleshooting Tips
"Cartridge not detected" or "Used / Counterfeit" error: Power-cycle the printer with the cartridges installed. If it persists, remove the cartridge, wipe the gold contacts with a lint-free cloth dampened with distilled water, dry thoroughly, and reinsert.
Streaky or faded prints: Run a printhead cleaning from the printer's touchscreen or the HP Smart app. Two cleaning cycles usually resolve clogged nozzles.
Alignment page prints blank: Confirm you removed the orange protective cap from each new cartridge and that all four cartridges are seated until you hear a click.
Cartridges with non-HP chips rejected: This is HP dynamic security, not a fault, and firmware updates can tighten it. Turning updates off won't make a rejected cartridge work. Remanufactured cartridges that keep the original HP chip are the reliable route.
