What Ink Does the HP OfficeJet Pro 9025e Use?

Quick answer: The HP OfficeJet Pro 9025e uses four individual HP 962 cartridges — Black, Cyan, Magenta and Yellow. The high-yield HP 962XL versions print about twice as many pages (roughly 2,000 black and 1,600 per color), and they are the better value for any office that prints every day. Castle Ink carries remanufactured HP 962XL Black (3JA03AN), HP 962XL Cyan (3JA00AN), HP 962XL Magenta (3JA01AN) and HP 962XL Yellow (3JA02AN).

HP 962XL Cyan 3JA00AN Cyan ~1,600 pages
HP 962XL Magenta 3JA01AN Magenta ~1,600 pages
HP 962XL Yellow 3JA02AN Yellow ~1,600 pages

The 9025e takes four separate cartridges, so you replace only the color that runs out. The same HP 962 / 962XL family fits the whole OfficeJet Pro 9010 and 9020 series — the 9010, 9012, 9014, 9015, 9015e, 9016, 9018, 9019, 9020, 9025 and 9025e. See our HP OfficeJet Pro 9015e ink guide for the sister model.

The 9025e is the top model in its series: print, scan, copy and fax, a 35-sheet automatic document feeder with single-pass two-sided scanning, automatic two-sided printing, a 250-sheet tray and a second 250-sheet tray. HP rates it at about 24 pages per minute in black and 20 in color.

Do not confuse HP 962 with HP 902, HP 910 or the newer HP 936. They look similar, but none of them fit the 9025e.

Before You Buy: HP+ and the HP OfficeJet Pro 9025e

The "e" in the model name means the HP OfficeJet Pro 9025e was sold as an HP+-eligible printer. If HP+ was activated during setup, HP's terms require Original HP cartridges for the life of the printer, plus an HP account and an internet connection. Third-party cartridges — ours or anyone else's — will not work in an HP+ enrolled printer, and there is no published way to undo it. If HP+ was declined at setup, the printer behaves like a normal printer and compatible or remanufactured cartridges work. Not sure? Look for HP+ branding in the HP Smart app or on the printer's information page. Buying used? Ask the seller before you stock up on ink.

Save on HP 962XL

Castle Ink's remanufactured HP 962XL cartridges are built from original HP shells: HP 962XL Black (3JA03AN), HP 962XL Cyan (3JA00AN), HP 962XL Magenta (3JA01AN) and HP 962XL Yellow (3JA02AN). Every cartridge is tested before it ships, backed by a 1-year guarantee, and ships free on orders over $50. Because HP firmware updates can block third-party chips, read how to keep HP firmware updates from blocking your ink before you install them. Want the real cost per page? How to Replace Ink in the HP OfficeJet Pro 9025e

  1. Turn the printer on and open the ink cartridge access door on the front. Wait for the carriage to move to the access position and stop.
  2. Press the front of the cartridge you are replacing to release it, then pull it straight out.
  3. Unwrap the new cartridge. Hold it by the sides and do not touch the copper contacts.
  4. Slide it into the slot that matches its color label and press until it clicks.
  5. Close the door. The printer may run a short alignment — let it finish.

Troubleshooting Tips

"Cartridge problem" or "cartridge missing": Reseat the cartridge until it clicks, and wipe the chip contacts with a lint-free cloth. On an HP+ enrolled printer, a non-HP cartridge will not clear this message. After a firmware update, compatibles with older chips are the usual cause.

Streaks or faded color: Run "Clean Printhead" from the printer's Tools menu or HP Smart. The printhead is a permanent part of the printer, so one or two cleaning cycles usually fix it. Stop there and print a diagnostic page instead of running more cycles.

Ink draining faster than expected: Printhead servicing uses ink. Leave the printer on in sleep mode rather than unplugging it.

Bottom Line

The HP OfficeJet Pro 9025e runs on HP 962, and the 962XL tier is where the cost per page drops. Check your HP+ status first, buy XL, replace only the color that runs out, and keep firmware updates under control if you use remanufactured cartridges.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the HP OfficeJet Pro 9025e use HP 962 or HP 962XL?
Both fit the same slots. XL only adds capacity.

Does the 9025e use the same ink as the 9015e?
Yes. Both are in HP's 9010/9020 family and take HP 962 / 962XL.

Will HP 936 cartridges fit?
No. HP 936 is for the newer OfficeJet Pro 9120e, 9130e and 9730e printers.

Does using compatible or remanufactured cartridges void my warranty?
No. Under the U.S. Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, a manufacturer cannot void your printer warranty only because you used third-party cartridges. Damage proven to be caused by a specific cartridge would not be covered, but the rest of the warranty still applies.

How are these page yields measured?
They are approximate figures based on HP's ISO/IEC 24711 testing. Real results depend on what you print, how often, and how much color is on the page.
