What Ink Does the HP OfficeJet Pro 9010 Use?

Quick answer: The HP OfficeJet Pro 9010 uses four individual HP 962 cartridges — Black, Cyan, Magenta and Yellow. The high-yield HP 962XL versions print about twice as many pages (roughly 2,000 black and 1,600 per color), and they are the better value for any office that prints every day.

HP OfficeJet Pro 9010 Ink Cartridges at a Glance

Cartridge Part Number Color Approx. Page Yield
HP 962 Black 3HZ99AN Black ~1,000 pages
HP 962 Cyan 3HZ96AN Cyan ~700 pages
HP 962 Magenta 3HZ97AN Magenta ~700 pages
HP 962 Yellow 3HZ98AN Yellow ~700 pages
HP 962XL Black 3JA03AN Black ~2,000 pages
HP 962XL Cyan 3JA00AN Cyan ~1,600 pages
HP 962XL Magenta 3JA01AN Magenta ~1,600 pages
HP 962XL Yellow 3JA02AN Yellow ~1,600 pages

The HP OfficeJet Pro 9010 takes four separate cartridges, so you replace only the color that runs out. Keep a spare black on hand — in an office it goes first by a wide margin. The same HP 962 / 962XL family fits the whole OfficeJet Pro 9010 series: the 9010, 9012, 9014, 9015, 9016, 9018, 9019, 9020 and 9025.

The OfficeJet Pro 9010 is a small-business all-in-one: print, scan, copy and fax, a 35-sheet automatic document feeder, automatic two-sided printing and a 250-sheet paper tray. HP rates it at about 22 pages per minute in black and 18 in color.

Do not confuse HP 962 with HP 902 or HP 910. They look similar, but they will not fit the 9010 series, and HP 962 will not fit OfficeJet Pro 6900 or 8020 printers either.

Save on HP 962 / 962XL

Castle Ink does not stock HP 962 cartridges right now, so we are not going to pretend otherwise. The best-value option is the HP 962XL — you can compare genuine and compatible 962XL sets here: HP 962XL ink on Amazon (as an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases). If you buy compatibles, pick a seller that states its chips are current, because HP firmware updates can block older third-party chips — see how to keep HP firmware updates from blocking your ink.

If you run other HP, Canon, Epson or Brother printers too, we very likely stock their ink — look them up on our Find Ink by Printer page, or run your numbers through our printer ink cost calculator.

How to Replace Ink in the HP OfficeJet Pro 9010

  1. Turn the printer on and open the ink cartridge access door on the front. Wait for the carriage to move to the access position and stop.
  2. Press the front of the cartridge you are replacing to release it, then pull it straight out.
  3. Unwrap the new cartridge. Hold it by the sides and do not touch the copper contacts.
  4. Slide it into the slot that matches its color label and press until it clicks.
  5. Close the door. The printer may run a short alignment — let it finish.

Troubleshooting Tips

"Cartridge problem" or "cartridge missing": Remove and reseat the cartridge until it clicks. If the message stays, wipe the chip contacts with a lint-free cloth and reinstall it. After a recent firmware update, compatible cartridges with older chips are the usual cause.

Streaks or faded color: Run "Clean Printhead" from the printer's Tools menu or the HP Smart app. The printhead on the 9010 series is a permanent part of the printer, so one or two cleaning cycles usually fix it. Stop after that and print a diagnostic page instead of running more cycles.

Ink draining faster than expected: Printhead cleaning and automatic servicing use ink. Leaving the printer on (in sleep mode) instead of unplugging it keeps servicing to a minimum.

Bottom Line

The HP OfficeJet Pro 9010 runs on HP 962, and the 962XL tier is where the cost per page really drops. Buy XL, replace only the color that runs out, and keep firmware updates under control if you plan to use compatible cartridges.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the HP OfficeJet Pro 9010 use HP 962 or HP 962XL?
Both fit. HP 962 and 962XL use the same slots in the HP OfficeJet Pro 9010. XL only adds capacity.

Will HP 902 or HP 910 cartridges work in the HP OfficeJet Pro 9010?
No. HP 902 and HP 910 are for the OfficeJet 6900 and OfficeJet 8010/8020 series. They will not fit the 9010 series.

Does using compatible cartridges void my HP OfficeJet Pro 9010 warranty?
No. Under the U.S. Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, HP cannot void your printer warranty only because you used compatible or remanufactured cartridges. Damage caused by a specific cartridge would not be covered, but the rest of the warranty still applies.

How are these page yields measured?
They are approximate figures based on HP's ISO/IEC 24711 testing. Your real results depend on what you print, how often, and how much color is on the page.
