What Ink Does the HP OfficeJet Pro 9010 Use?

Correction (October 2026): an earlier version of this guide suggested that holding back HP firmware updates is enough to keep compatible cartridges working. The 9010 series has HP dynamic security built in, which no setting or update turns off, and HP+ 'e' models (such as the 9015e) require Original HP ink for the life of the printer.

Quick answer: The HP OfficeJet Pro 9010 uses four individual HP 962 cartridges — Black, Cyan, Magenta and Yellow. The high-yield HP 962XL versions print about twice as many pages (roughly 2,000 black and 1,600 per color), and they are the better value for any office that prints every day.

The HP OfficeJet Pro 9010 takes four separate cartridges, so you replace only the color that runs out. Keep a spare black on hand — in an office it goes first by a wide margin. The same HP 962 / 962XL family fits the OfficeJet Pro 9010 and 9020 series, including the HP+ "e" versions: the 9010, 9012e, 9013, 9014e, 9015/9015e, 9016/9016e, 9018/9018e, 9019, 9020/9020e, 9022/9022e, 9025/9025e and 9028/9028e.

The OfficeJet Pro 9010 is a small-business all-in-one: print, scan, copy and fax, a 35-sheet automatic document feeder, automatic two-sided printing and a 250-sheet paper tray. HP rates it at about 22 pages per minute in black and 18 in color.

Do not confuse HP 962 with HP 902 or HP 910. They look similar, but they will not fit the 9010 series, and HP 962 will not fit OfficeJet Pro 6900 or 8020 printers either.

How to Replace Ink in the HP OfficeJet Pro 9010

  1. Turn the printer on and open the ink cartridge access door on the front. Wait for the carriage to move to the access position and stop.
  2. Press the front of the cartridge you are replacing to release it, then pull it straight out.
  3. Unwrap the new cartridge. Hold it by the sides and do not touch the copper contacts.
  4. Slide it into the slot that matches its color label and press until it clicks.
  5. Close the door. The printer may run a short alignment — let it finish.

Troubleshooting Tips

"Cartridge problem" or "cartridge missing": Remove and reseat the cartridge until it clicks. If the message stays, wipe the chip contacts with a lint-free cloth and reinstall it. If it is a non-HP cartridge, that is likely the cause: the 9010 series has HP dynamic security built in, which rejects cartridges with non-HP chips, and no firmware update turns it off. Cartridges that keep the original HP chip, like our remanufactured 962XL, are the ones that work on printers not enrolled in HP+.

Streaks or faded color: Run "Clean Printhead" from the printer's Tools menu or the HP Smart app. The printhead on the 9010 series is a permanent part of the printer, so one or two cleaning cycles usually fix it. Stop after that and print a diagnostic page instead of running more cycles.

Ink draining faster than expected: Printhead cleaning and automatic servicing use ink. Leaving the printer on (in sleep mode) instead of unplugging it keeps servicing to a minimum.

Is there a firmware update that turns off cartridge blocking on the 9015e?

No. HP Community experts say dynamic security is built into the printer and no update removes it. The "Cartridge Protection" switch in the settings is a different feature: it locks cartridges to one printer.

Can I use non-HP ink in an HP+ model like the 9015e?

Not once HP+ is turned on. HP+ commits the printer to Original HP cartridges for its life, it can only be skipped during setup, and HP Community experts say it can't be undone.

Can the document feeder take legal-size pages?

Yes. The 35-sheet feeder accepts originals up to 8.5 x 14 in., but the flatbed glass tops out at 8.5 x 11.7 in.

How much can the printer handle each month?

HP rates it for up to 25,000 pages a month.

Can I still buy one new, and what replaced it?

HP has discontinued the 9010 series and didn't name a direct successor. Its current comparable line, the OfficeJet Pro 9120e series, uses different cartridges, so your HP 962 stock won't carry over.

OfficeJet Pro 9010 quirks worth knowing

  • HP's own 2019 datasheet labels it a dynamic security enabled printer, meant only for cartridges with HP original circuitry. Cartridge blocking was there from launch, not added later.
  • It has a front USB port for printing from a flash drive and two phone jacks (line and phone) for fax.
  • The input tray holds 250 sheets and the output tray 60, with automatic two-sided printing.

Does the HP OfficeJet Pro 9010 use HP 962 or HP 962XL?
Both fit. HP 962 and 962XL use the same slots in the HP OfficeJet Pro 9010. XL only adds capacity. Castle Ink sells remanufactured 962XL in all four colors.

Will HP 902 or HP 910 cartridges work in the HP OfficeJet Pro 9010?
No. HP 902 and HP 910 are for the OfficeJet 6900 and OfficeJet 8010/8020 series. They will not fit the 9010 series.

Does using compatible cartridges void my HP OfficeJet Pro 9010 warranty?
No. Under the U.S. Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, HP cannot void your printer warranty only because you used compatible or remanufactured cartridges. Damage caused by a specific cartridge would not be covered, but the rest of the warranty still applies.
