What Ink Does the HP Photosmart 6510 Use?

Quick answer: the HP Photosmart 6510 uses HP 564 ink in four cartridges — black, cyan, magenta and yellow. The high-yield versions are HP 564XL.

The important detail, and the one that costs people money: the 6510 does not take a photo black. HP's 564 family includes a fifth Photo cartridge (CB317WN), but that is only for five-cartridge Photosmarts like the 7510, 7515 and 7520. HP's own wording on the Photo cartridge is explicit that it is for five-cartridge printers and does not replace the black. Buy a five-pack for a 6510 and you will have a cartridge you cannot use.

HP Photosmart 6510 ink at a glance

Cartridge Family Part Number Approx. Yield
Black HP 564 CB316WN ~250 pages
Cyan HP 564 CB318WN ~300 pages
Magenta HP 564 CB319WN ~300 pages
Yellow HP 564 CB320WN ~300 pages
Black (high yield) HP 564XL CN684WN ~550 pages
Cyan (high yield) HP 564XL CB323WN High yield
Magenta (high yield) HP 564XL CB324WN High yield
Yellow (high yield) HP 564XL CB325WN High yield

The standard yields and the 564XL black are HP's own published figures. HP's US store no longer lists the 564XL colors, so the page counts widely quoted for those are retailer numbers rather than current HP specs — worth knowing rather than being told a figure that cannot be checked.

Buy XL, especially the black

A standard 564 black is about 250 pages. The XL more than doubles it for a modest premium, and on a printer this age the cartridge cost is the entire cost of ownership. There is no 564XXL — HP made exactly two tiers, and any listing claiming otherwise is using XL as marketing language.

Castle Ink recommendation

Four cartridges, no photo black. If you also own a 7510 or 7520, that one needs the photo cartridge as well.

About the HP Photosmart 6510

A 2011 home all-in-one: print, scan and copy at 11 ISO ppm black and 7.5 ppm color, with a 3.45-inch touchscreen, memory card slots, Wi-Fi and ePrint. Paper capacity is 80 sheets of plain paper plus 20 sheets of photo paper. There is no document feeder — scanning and copying are flatbed only, one page at a time.

HP has discontinued it. The four-ink 564 system is still perfectly serviceable, and compatible cartridges keep the running cost low enough to be worth it.

Common problems on this model

"Ink System Failure", errors 0xc19a0013 or 0xc19a0003

The characteristic fault of this 564 generation. Take the cheap causes first: HP puts a roughly two-year best-before date on 564 cartridges, and expired ink alone can trigger this, so check cartridge age before anything else. Then run a printhead cleaning. Then replace any cartridge that is old or part-used. The printhead is the last suspect, not the first.

The printhead is the real weak point

The printhead on this generation is a separate part that does fail, and HP does not sell it as a retail supply — it is a service part. That is the honest reason these printers eventually retire, and it is worth knowing before spending much on a used one.

Clogged nozzles after the printer sits unused

Very common on this model, and the reason is simple: a printer that goes months between jobs dries out. Run the built-in cleaning routine first. If that fails after two cycles, the printhead can be removed and cleaned manually, which is more often successful here than on printers with integrated heads.

Stuck asking for a cartridge replacement

Usually a cartridge the printer cannot read rather than an empty one. Remove it, wipe the copper contacts with a dry lint-free cloth, and reseat until it clicks. Power-cycle afterwards.

FAQ

What ink does the HP Photosmart 6510 use?

HP 564 black, cyan, magenta and yellow, or the high-yield HP 564XL versions. Four cartridges.

Does the Photosmart 6510 need a photo black cartridge?

No. It is a four-cartridge printer. The 564 Photo cartridge is only for five-cartridge models like the 7510 and 7520.

Is there an HP 564XXL?

No. HP made 564 and 564XL only.

Does the 6510 have a document feeder?

No. The scanner is flatbed only.

Can I use compatible 564 cartridges?

Yes, and on a printer this old it is usually the only economic option. It does not void your warranty — see the legal answer.

Which other printers use HP 564?

A long list across the Photosmart range, including the 5520, 6520, 7510, 7520, B8550, C6380 and D7560 — but check the cartridge count first, because the five-ink models need the extra photo black.
