What Ink Does the HP Photosmart 7510 Use?

Quick answer: the HP Photosmart 7510 uses HP 564 ink — and it is a five-cartridge printer. Black, photo black, cyan, magenta and yellow. The high-yield versions are HP 564XL.

That fifth cartridge is what trips people up. The 564 Photo cartridge (CB317WN) is a separate photo black that sits alongside the ordinary black — it does not replace it. Buy a four-cartridge 564 set and you will be one cartridge short, and this printer will not run with an empty slot.

HP Photosmart 7510 ink at a glance

Cartridge Family Part Number Approx. Yield
Black HP 564 CB316WN ~250 pages
Photo Black HP 564 CB317WN ~130 photos
Cyan HP 564 CB318WN ~300 pages
Magenta HP 564 CB319WN ~300 pages
Yellow HP 564 CB320WN ~300 pages
Black (high yield) HP 564XL CN684WN ~550 pages
Cyan (high yield) HP 564XL CB323WN High yield
Magenta (high yield) HP 564XL CB324WN High yield
Yellow (high yield) HP 564XL CB325WN High yield
Photo (high yield) HP 564XL CB322WN High yield

The standard yields and the 564XL black figure are HP's own published numbers. An honest note on the rest: HP's US store no longer lists the 564XL colors or the 564XL photo cartridge, so the yield figures you will see quoted for those around the web are retailer numbers rather than current HP ones. We would rather flag that than present them as HP specs.

Is there a 564XXL?

No. HP's own page is titled "HP 564 and HP 564XL Ink Cartridges" — exactly two tiers. Any listing advertising a "564XXL" is a third-party product using XL language loosely.

Castle Ink recommendation

Castle Ink stocks the whole 564 family, which matters on a five-cartridge printer where a missing color stops everything:

The bundle plus a separate photo cartridge is the combination that actually fills a 7510.

About the HP Photosmart 7510

A 2011-era photo all-in-one: print, scan, copy and eFax, 13.5 ISO ppm black and 9 ppm color, a 4.3-inch touchscreen, 125-sheet main tray plus a dedicated photo tray, memory card slots, Wi-Fi and ePrint. There is a document feeder for multi-page scanning.

HP has discontinued it. The five-ink system with a separate photo black is genuinely good at photographs, which is why so many are still in service — but see the printhead note below before investing in one.

Common problems on this model

"Ink System Failure", errors 0xc19a0013, 0xc19a0003 or 0xc19a0020

The signature failure of this whole 564 generation. Work through it in this order, because the cheap causes are more common than the expensive one: check cartridge age first — HP puts a roughly two-year best-before date on 564 cartridges and expired ink alone can trigger this. Then run a printhead cleaning. Then swap any cartridge that is old or was sitting part-used. Only after all of that should you suspect the printhead.

The printhead is the real weak point

Worth knowing before you spend money on ink. The printhead on this generation is a separate part that fails, and HP does not sell it as a retail supply — it is a service part sourced third-party. That is the honest reason these printers eventually get retired, and it is why we would not recommend buying a used one at any price without testing it first.

Streaks or a missing color on photos only

Photo output shows nozzle problems long before text does. Run a nozzle check, one cleaning cycle, then print a photo test page rather than a text page to judge whether it worked.

Prints stop with cartridges still showing ink

Usually a cartridge the printer cannot read rather than an empty one. Remove each cartridge, wipe the copper contacts with a dry lint-free cloth, and reseat firmly until it clicks.

FAQ

What ink does the HP Photosmart 7510 use?

HP 564 in five cartridges — black, photo black, cyan, magenta and yellow — or the 564XL high-yield versions.

How many cartridges does the Photosmart 7510 take?

Five. A four-cartridge set will leave the photo slot empty and the printer will not print.

What is the difference between 564 black and 564 photo?

The ordinary black prints text on plain paper. The photo black supplies shadow depth and neutral blacks on photo paper. They are not substitutes and the printer uses both.

Is there an HP 564XXL?

No. HP made 564 and 564XL only.

Does the Photosmart 6510 use the same ink?

Same 564 family, but the 6510 is a four-cartridge printer with no photo black. Do not buy a photo cartridge for a 6510.

Can I use compatible 564 cartridges?

Yes, and on a printer this old it is usually the only sensible option. Using them does not void your warranty — see the legal answer.
