Discontinued. HP released the Photosmart C4180 around mid-2006, and HP's support forum calls it an end-of-life product. In October 2026 Staples had original HP 92 and 93 out of stock for delivery.

Are Original HP 92 and 93 Worth It?

How Do I Replace the Ink in the HP Photosmart C4180?

  1. Turn the printer on and lower the cartridge door at the front. Wait for the carriage to stop.
  2. Press down on the old cartridge to release it and slide it out.
  3. Unpack the new cartridge, holding it by the sides, and pull off the pink tab and tape. Don't touch the contacts or nozzles.
  4. Insert it label-up into the correct slot (tri-color in the left slot with the green label; black or photo in the right slot with the black-and-orange label) and push until it clicks.
  5. Close the door. Print the alignment page and scan it on the glass if the printer asks.

Which Other Printers Use HP 92 and 93?

What Photosmart C4180 owners ask

These are the questions that come up most for this printer in HP's support community and owner reviews, answered in our words.

Which black cartridge does it use, HP 92 or HP 98?

The HP 92 (about 220 pages) is the core black cartridge. Ink sellers also list the HP 98 (about 420 pages), but we couldn't find HP's own confirmation for the C4180.

Can I print photos with a photo cartridge?

Yes. HP's datasheet lists an optional photo cartridge. It goes in the right slot in place of the black. Store the black in a cartridge protector while it's out.

Is the C4180 wireless?

No. It connects by USB only and has no network port.

It keeps saying 'remove and check cartridge'. What now?

The printer can't read the cartridge. Clean the copper contacts on the cartridge and in the carriage with a lint-free cloth, reseat it until it clicks, and turn the printer off and on. On remanufactured cartridges, check the contact strip is flat and clean. If a new cartridge doesn't clear it, the carriage contacts may be faulty, and HP no longer services the model.

Photosmart C4180 quirks worth knowing

  • HP rated it at up to 30 pages a minute in black and 24 in color in draft mode, and 8.5 and 5.6 in normal mode. Cartridge Save found copying and scanning nearer 10 pages a minute.
  • It has a 2.4-inch color screen and card slots for CompactFlash, Memory Stick, MMC and SD, plus PictBridge for cameras.
  • There's a 100-sheet main tray and a 20-sheet photo tray. HP rates it for up to 3,000 pages a month.
  • Cartridge Save called it an average all-rounder: decent text and graphics, but slow, weak photo prints.
