What Ink Does the HP DeskJet D1660 Use?
Last Updated:Quick answer: The HP DeskJet D1660 uses two HP 60 cartridges: one black and one tri-color. The high-yield HP 60XL versions fit too. Castle Ink stocks remanufactured 60XL Black, 60XL Tri-color, standard 60 Black and 60 Tri-color, and a 60XL 2-pack.
People often search for it as the DeskJet 1660, but HP's name is D1660, part of the D1600 series. It takes the same ink as the Photosmart C4680, DeskJet F4480 and ENVY 120. Watch the region: the UK and European D1660 (CB770B) takes HP 300 cartridges, which won't fit a U.S. printer, and U.S. HP 60 won't fit theirs.

Buy by the HP 60 number. Staples titles some of these cartridges "HP 60/901", but HP 901 is a different family that won't fit. One 4inkjets listing also calls CC641WN a 61XL; it's the HP 60XL black.
Is HP 60XL Worth It?
Yes, but HP's own cartridges are expensive. On October 16, 2026, Staples listed HP's 60XL black at $83.99 (about 14¢ a page), the standard 60 black at $32.99 (about 16.5¢ a page), the 60 tri-color at $42.99 (about 26¢ a page) and the 60 2-pack at $71.99. 4inkjets listed HP's 60XL tri-color at $66.41 (about 15.1¢ a page), backordered. Our remanufactured 60XL black is $20.95 (about 3.5¢ a page) and the 60XL tri-color $23.95 (about 5.4¢ a page), or $43.95 for the 60XL 2-pack.

What DeskJet D1660 owners ask
These are the questions that come up most for this printer in HP's support community and owner reviews, answered in our words.
The power light is blinking fast and nothing prints.
HP's manual lists four causes: no paper, a paper jam, the cover open, or a cartridge missing or badly seated. Load paper or clear the jam and press the power button, close the door, and check both cartridges are in the right slots with the tape off.
It doesn't recognize a new cartridge.
Usually the tape is still on, the cartridge is in the wrong slot or the contacts are dirty. Take it out, wipe the copper contacts on the cartridge and in the carriage with a lint-free cloth, and reinsert it.
The ink gauge says empty on a remanufactured cartridge.
The level estimate doesn't reset on refilled or remanufactured cartridges. Dismiss the warning and keep printing until print quality drops.
Does the D1660 have Wi-Fi or a scanner?
No. It's a print-only printer that connects by USB. It has no scanner, Wi-Fi, Ethernet or card slots.
DeskJet D1660 quirks worth knowing
- HP claimed up to 20 pages a minute in black and 16 in color in draft mode. Expert Reviews measured 12.7 in fast draft. We couldn't find ISO speeds.
- There's no screen or control panel, just a power button with a light.
- The 80-sheet tray feeds printed pages back onto the top of the input stack, and there's no paper cover.
- Expert Reviews saw the starter black cartridge streak after about 70 pages. Borderless printing works on 4x6 tabbed photo paper only.
