What Ink Does the HP ENVY 6100e Use?

Quick answer: The HP ENVY 6100e uses HP 68 ink — one black and one tri-color cartridge — with HP 68e EvoMore as the higher-capacity black. It does not use HP 67, even though the older ENVY 6000 and 6400 printers do.

Limited data: We could not find enough published expert scores for this printer, so that weight is spread across the other pillars.

Still sold new on HP.com, but Best Buy and Target no longer stock the 6155e, and stores are moving to the non-"e" ENVY 6155, which takes the same HP 68 cartridges.

Why there is no Castle Ink cartridge for this printer yet

HP 68 is a new cartridge family, shared only with the ENVY 6100e and 6500e series. The first third-party versions only appeared in September 2025, and the printer uses HP dynamic security, which blocks cartridges with aftermarket chips. Until remanufactured HP 68 cartridges with original HP chips are available, Original HP 68 is the safe buy. The HP 68e EvoMore black (about 320 pages) doubles the pages per cartridge, but at current retail prices (about $56 versus $27 for a standard HP 68 black) it costs about the same per page. Its benefit is fewer cartridge changes.

HP 68, not HP 67. The model numbers look close, but the ENVY 6100e series moved to HP's newer 68 cartridges. An HP 67 cartridge will not seat in this printer. HP 68 fits the whole ENVY 6100e series, including the 6152e, 6155e and 6165e and the newer non-"e" ENVY 6155, as well as the ENVY 6500e series (6552e, 6555e and 6558e).

Important — HP+ warning: The "e" in HP ENVY 6100e means it was sold for HP+. If you activated HP+ during setup, the printer is locked to Original HP cartridges for its lifetime, and compatible or remanufactured cartridges will be rejected with a "cartridge problem" or "non-HP cartridge" message. HP+ cannot be switched off after activation. Skipping HP+ does not open the printer to any cartridge, though: the ENVY 6100e also uses HP dynamic security, which blocks cartridges with non-HP chips whether or not HP+ is on. See how to keep HP firmware updates from blocking your ink and our HP Instant Ink vs. compatible cartridges breakdown before you buy.

The ENVY 6100e is a compact home all-in-one (print, scan, copy) with automatic two-sided printing, dual-band Wi-Fi and a 100-sheet input tray. The flatbed scanner has no document feeder.

How to Replace Ink in the HP ENVY 6100e

  1. Turn the printer on and open the front ink cartridge access door. Wait for the carriage to move to the center and stop.
  2. Press down lightly on the cartridge you are replacing to release it, then pull it out toward you. The tri-color cartridge sits on the left, black on the right.
  3. Take the new cartridge out of its packaging and pull off the plastic tape by its pink or orange tab. Do not touch the copper contacts or the ink nozzles.
  4. Slide the cartridge into its slot at a slight upward angle, nozzles facing the printer, and push it forward until it snaps into place.
  5. Close the access door. The printer may print an alignment page — scan it if the control panel or HP Smart app asks you to.

Troubleshooting Tips

"Cartridge problem" or "cartridge will not fit": Check that you have HP 68 and not HP 67 — that is the most common cause by far. If the number is right, wipe the copper contacts with a lint-free cloth, let them dry, and reseat the cartridge.

Streaks or missing colors: Run "Clean Printheads" from the HP Smart app or the printer's Tools menu. The printhead is built into each cartridge on this printer, so if one cleaning cycle does not fix it, the cartridge itself is the likely culprit.

Low-ink warning on a brand-new printer: The cartridges that ship in the box are lower-yield setup cartridges. That early warning is normal — it is not a fault.

What ENVY 6100e owners ask

These are the questions that come up most for this printer on retailer Q&A pages, HP's support forum and owner reviews, answered in our words.

Can I print from an iPhone or iPad?

Yes. It supports AirPrint over Wi-Fi, so iPhones and iPads can print to it directly.

Can it send or receive faxes?

No. There is no fax modem or phone jack. The "mobile fax" HP mentions is sent through the HP Smart app.

Can I connect it with a USB cable?

Yes. It has one USB 2.0 port, but HP does not put a cable in the box, so buy one if you need it.

Does it have a document feeder for multi-page scans?

No. Scanning and copying are on the flatbed glass only, one page at a time.

Can it print on legal-size paper?

No. HP lists custom paper sizes up to 8.5 × 12 in for one-sided printing (8.5 × 11.7 in for two-sided), so 14-inch legal sheets are out.

ENVY 6100e quirks worth knowing

  • HP recommends only 100–400 pages a month (maximum 1,000). It is built for light home use, and Digital Trends called that out as a drawback.
  • Stores are switching from the 6155e to a non-"e" ENVY 6155 (C2WR7A) at about $79.99. It takes the same HP 68 cartridges; we could not confirm whether it is sold for HP+.
  • Outside the US, HP 68 is sold as HP 308, and the printer appears as the ENVY 6120e in European listings. Buy cartridges for the region the printer came from.
  • It has dual-band Wi-Fi 5 with HP's self-reset feature and a 2.4-inch color touchscreen, but no Ethernet port.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use HP 67 in the HP ENVY 6100e?
No. The ENVY 6100e series uses HP 68. HP 67 fits the older ENVY 6000/6400 printers.

Is there an HP 68XL?
HP sells the higher-capacity black as HP 68e EvoMore (about 320 pages) rather than 68XL. There is no higher-capacity tri-color. Listings sold as "68XL" are third-party cartridges.

Does using third-party cartridges void my warranty?
No. Under the U.S. Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, HP cannot void your printer warranty only because you used third-party cartridges. HP+ is a separate restriction you agree to during setup.

How are these page yields measured?
They are approximate figures from HP. Real results depend on what and how often you print.
