What Ink Does the HP OfficeJet H470 Use?

Quick answer: The HP OfficeJet H470 mobile printer takes two cartridges. For black, use HP 94 (about 480 pages) or HP 98 (about 420 pages). For color, use HP 97 tri-color (about 560 pages) or HP 95 tri-color (about 330 pages). For photos you can swap the black for an HP 99 photo or HP 100 gray photo cartridge. Castle Ink stocks all six: HP 94, HP 98, HP 97, HP 95, HP 99 and HP 100.

The same ink fits every version: the H470, the battery-equipped H470b, the H470wbt with Bluetooth, and the H470wf. If you are buying for a road kit, HP 94 and HP 97 give the most pages for the same price.

HP 94 or HP 98? HP 95 or HP 97?

Buy the HP 94 and HP 97. They fit the same cradles as the 98 and 95 that ship in the box but hold more ink, and at Castle Ink they cost the same $12.95 each. That works out to about 2.7¢ a page for black and 2.3¢ for color. Original HP 94 was listed at $58.99 at Quill on October 12, 2026 and was out of stock, roughly 12¢ a page; original HP cartridges for this family are now hard to find at all.

How Do I Replace the Ink in the HP OfficeJet H470?

  1. With the printer on, open the front access cover and wait for the carriage to stop.
  2. Lift the cartridge latch and carefully remove the old cartridge.
  3. Unpack the new cartridge and pull the colored tab to remove the protective film. Don't touch the nozzles or copper contacts.
  4. Insert it at the same angle as the old one, matching the symbol on the latch, then close the latch flat so it pushes the cartridge into the cradle.
  5. Close the cover, let the printer initialize, then align the cartridges from the Toolbox (Windows) or HP Printer Utility (Mac).

Which Other Printers Use the Same Ink?

HP 94, 95, 97 and 98 cartridges also fit the OfficeJet 100 and 150 Mobile, the DeskJet 460 mobile series, the DeskJet 6940, DeskJet 5740, 6540 and 9800, and Photosmart models such as the 2575, 2610, 8150 and 8450. The OfficeJet 6310 takes the 98 and 95 but not the 94 or 97.

What OfficeJet H470 owners ask

These are the questions that come up most for this printer on retailer Q&A pages, manufacturer support communities and owner reviews, answered in our words.

Does the H470 take HP 94 or HP 98 black?

Both. The HP 98 ships in the box and the HP 94 holds more ink. Either one goes in the black/photo cradle.

Can I print with only one cartridge?

Yes. With only black installed everything prints in grayscale; with only the tri-color it prints color and a composite black. Printing can be slower, and borderless printing needs the tri-color.

What do the blinking cartridge lights mean?

A blinking light means that cartridge is missing or faulty. A solid light means it is low or empty.

The printer won't accept my cartridge. What do I do?

Remove the cartridge and switch the printer off. Wait about 20 seconds, switch it on without the cartridge, then reinstall it. Check that the tape is fully removed and that it is in the right cradle.

How long does the battery take to charge?

About 4 hours before first use and about 2 hours after that. HP rates it at up to about 480 pages per charge.

OfficeJet H470 quirks worth knowing

  • HP sold a travel cartridge holder (CB006A) to store the black or photo cartridge you take out.
  • Symbols on the latch match symbols on the cartridges so you can confirm the right cradle.
  • Wireless printing works on battery but drains it faster.
  • It weighs about 5 pounds with the battery and is rated for up to 500 pages a month.
