Original HP 952XL singles cost far more at office retailers, and Staples reviewers regularly complain that the cartridges cost more than the printer. Will Remanufactured 952 Ink Work?

Yes, with one firmware caveat. HP firmware updates since 2016 have repeatedly blocked some third-party chips in the 952 family. Two kinds of cartridge are sold: ones that reuse the original HP chip (our OEM-chip pack) and ones with a new third-party chip (our new-chip singles). If your printer rejects one type after an update, the other type often works. How Do I Replace Ink in the OfficeJet Pro 8725?

Turn the printer on and open the ink cartridge access door; wait for the carriage to stop.
Press the front of the cartridge you are replacing to release it, then pull it out.
Unpack the new cartridge and remove the orange pull tab.
Slide it into the matching color slot until it clicks.
Close the door and let the printer finish its startup routine.

No. Like most HP business inkjets, the 8725 needs all four cartridges installed and not empty.

Why do the colors run out before the black?

The printer uses color ink to service the printhead, and color XL cartridges hold less than the black. Several Staples reviewers say the colors go first.

Does it use HP 953 ink?

Outside North America it does. HP 953 is the international version of the 952. U.S. printers need 952.

Is the printhead replaceable?

Yes, the 8700-series printhead is a separate part, but replacement heads are hard to find now. A head failure on an older unit usually means it is time for a new printer.
