What Ink Does the HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 Use?

Correction (October 2026): an earlier version of this guide said nothing about the OfficeJet Pro 8710 forces you onto Original HP cartridges. HP says the 8710 is intended only for cartridges with an original HP chip, and owners report that compatible cartridges stopped working after a 2021 firmware update.

HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 Ink Cartridges at a Glance

The HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 takes four individual cartridges. The same HP 952 / 952XL cartridges also fit the OfficeJet 8702 and the OfficeJet Pro 7720, 7740, 8210, 8216, 8715, 8720, 8725, 8730 and 8740. HP treats the 8715 as part of the 8710 series, so the two machines share supplies exactly.

This is not an HP+ printer, so there is no lifetime Original-HP-ink requirement. It does use HP dynamic security. HP's product page says the 8710 is intended only for cartridges with an original HP chip, that cartridges with non-HP chips may not work, and that ones that work today may stop after a firmware update. Remanufactured cartridges that reuse the original HP chip, like ours, are the reliable choice.

How to Replace Ink in the HP OfficeJet Pro 8710

1. Power the printer on and open the ink cartridge access door — the carriage will slide to the center. Wait for it to stop moving before reaching in.
2. Press down on the old cartridge to release it, then pull it forward and out of its slot.
3. Unwrap the new cartridge and pull the orange tab to remove the protective plastic. Do not touch the gold contacts.
4. Slide the new cartridge into its slot at a slight upward angle and push up until you hear it click into place.
5. Close the access door. The printer will print an alignment page automatically — keep it long enough to confirm the print is sharp and the colors are right.

Troubleshooting Tips

"Cartridge missing or damaged": Power-cycle the printer with the cartridges installed. If it persists, remove the cartridge, wipe the gold contacts with a lint-free cloth dampened with distilled water, dry thoroughly, and reinsert at the upward angle until it clicks.

Streaky or faded prints: On the 8710 the nozzles are on the separate printhead, not the cartridges, so run a printhead cleaning from the printer or HP software. Two cleaning cycles clear most blockages; more than that mostly wastes ink. If you get "Printhead Problem" or "Missing or Failed Printhead," cleaning won't help (see the questions below).

Firmware updates rejecting compatible ink: HP warns that cartridges with non-HP chips may stop working after a firmware update, and 8710 owners saw exactly that after an April 2021 update. HP offers no rollback. Cartridges that reuse the original HP chip are the dependable option.

Alignment page prints blank or skewed: Confirm you removed the orange protective tab from each new cartridge and that all four are seated with a firm click, then run alignment again from HP Smart.

Owners trace it to a firmware update, one of them dated April 5, 2021. HP's product page warns that cartridges with non-HP chips may stop working after updates, and HP offers no way to roll the firmware back. Cartridges that reuse the original HP chip, like our remanufactured 952XL, avoid the problem.

The printer says "Printhead Problem" or shows error 0x6100004a. Is it the ink?

Usually not. On the 8710 the printhead is a separate part from the four cartridges, and this error tends to point to the printhead or the service station that caps and cleans it. One owner who worked through every reset and reseat in 2026 found the repair would cost more than a new printer.

Some listings say the HP 952 black prints 1,000 pages and others say 900. Which is right?

Both have come from HP. Its 2016 datasheet rated the 952 black at about 1,000 pages and each color at 700. Current HP and Staples listings say 900 and 630, and 1,450 per XL color instead of 1,600. We use the current figures.

Can the 8710 scan both sides of a page from the document feeder?

Yes, but slowly. HP lists two-sided feeder scanning at up to 4 images per minute. The feeder flips the page and runs it through a second time; it does not scan both sides in one pass.

Can I still buy a new 8710? What replaced it?

No. HP and Best Buy list it as no longer available new. HP names no direct successor, and the 952 cartridges remain easy to find.

To the ISO/IEC standard for the cartridge type, at 5% page coverage on plain paper. That is a deliberately modest amount of coverage, so heavy graphics, photos or dense tables will always yield fewer pages than the rating. The numbers are useful for comparing cartridges against each other, not for predicting your exact month.

What is the difference between the OfficeJet Pro 8710 and 8715?
For supplies purposes, nothing. HP files the 8715 under the 8710 series and both take HP 952 / 952XL with identical yields. The differences are in bundled features and retail channel, not ink.

Should I buy 952 or 952XL?
952XL, in almost every case. Black goes from ~900 to ~2,000 pages and color from ~630 to ~1,450 — more than double, for well under double the price. Standard 952 only makes sense if the printer sees a handful of pages a month.
