Not HP+, but Dynamic Security Applies
HP+ ties a printer to Original HP ink, but the 8210 is not an HP+ printer, so there is no enrollment to check and no Original-HP-only requirement.
What does apply is HP dynamic security, which HP lists as a feature of the 8210. The printer checks each cartridge's chip, and cartridges with non-HP chips can be rejected, including ones that worked before a firmware update.

Standard vs. XL vs. 956XL
For most owners the 952XL is the right buy: roughly 2,000 black pages against 900, and about 1,450 per color against 630, for a price nowhere near double. The standard 952 only makes sense on a printer that sits idle for long stretches.

One caveat on all these numbers: HP revised its published yields for the 952 family downward, and many retailer listings still quote the older, more flattering figures. The table above uses HP's current numbers.
How to Replace the Ink in the HP OfficeJet Pro 8210
- With the printer on, open the ink cartridge access door on the front left. The carriage moves to the center.
- Press in on the cartridge you are replacing to release it, then pull it straight out.
- Unwrap the new cartridge and pull the orange plastic tab to remove the protective tape. Do not touch the copper contacts.
- Slide the cartridge into the matching color-coded slot and press firmly until it clicks.
- Repeat for the remaining cartridges, then close the door.
- Let the printer finish priming. Print a quality diagnostic page if the first output looks off.
Hold new cartridges by the sides. Fingerprints on the copper contacts are a common and entirely avoidable cause of "cartridge not detected" errors.
Troubleshooting Tips
Printer does not recognize a new cartridge: Power the printer fully off at the switch, reseat the cartridge, then power back on. This clears most chip-read failures on the 8210.
A cartridge stopped working after an update: The 8210 is a dynamic-security printer, and an update can stop it accepting cartridges with non-HP chips. Remanufactured cartridges with the original HP chip are the safer choice.
Horizontal banding or missing nozzles: Run Printhead Cleaning from Tools on the front panel. The printhead is separate from the cartridges on this model, so cleaning genuinely fixes clogs.
Duplex prints smear: Give heavier paper a moment to dry, or set a heavier media type in the driver so the printer slows the pass.
Printer drops off the network: Assign it a static IP in your router. This is a network issue, not an ink one.

Outside the Americas the 8210 is sold with HP 953 cartridges. HP's U.S. compatibility list puts it on HP 952. Match the number printed on the cartridges already in your printer.
Is the OfficeJet Pro 8216 the same printer?
It is a close variant. HP lists the 8216 as a separate entry on its HP 952 compatibility list, so it takes the same 952 and 952XL cartridges.
How much printing is it built for?
HP's datasheet gives a duty cycle of up to 30,000 pages a month, with 250 to 1,500 pages a month recommended.
OfficeJet Pro 8210 quirks worth knowing
- Two-sided printing costs a lot of speed. HP's datasheet rates it at 22 pages a minute in black and 18 in color (ISO), but about 12 a minute in black when printing both sides.
- HP measured its current 952 black yield in the OfficeJet Pro 8700 series, not the 8210. Treat the page counts as a guide, not a promise for this exact model.
- On HP's 952 compatibility list the 8210 appears under its Instant Ink bundle SKU, D9L64A. If a listing names D9L64A, it is this printer.
