Correction (October 2026): an earlier version of this guide said the OfficeJet Pro 8715 uses HP 950/951 cartridges. It uses HP 952 and 952XL (and fits the 956XL black). HP 950/951 do not fit it.

Quick Answer: The HP OfficeJet Pro 8715 uses HP 952 and HP 952XL cartridges in black, cyan, magenta and yellow. The extra-high-yield HP 956XL black (about 3,000 pages) also fits, though HP has discontinued it. HP 950/951 cartridges do not fit. How to Replace Ink in the OfficeJet Pro 8715

  1. Power on the printer and open the cartridge access door — the carriage will move to the center.
  2. Press in on the empty cartridge to release it, then pull it out of its slot.
  3. Unwrap the new HP 952 or 952XL cartridge (or 956XL black) and remove the orange protective tab.
  4. Insert the new cartridge into the matching color slot until it clicks securely.
  5. Close the access door — the OfficeJet Pro 8715 will run a brief alignment routine.

Troubleshooting Tips

"Cartridge Problem" message: Remove the cartridge, wipe the gold contacts with a soft lint-free cloth, and reseat firmly. A printer restart usually clears the error.

Faded or banded prints: Run Tools > Maintenance > Clean Printhead one or two cycles. Quality typically returns after the cleaning.

Printer not recognizing new ink: Confirm you removed the orange tab and the cartridge is fully clicked in. On HP's dynamic-security 8700-series printers, a cartridge with a non-HP chip can be rejected outright; one that keeps the original HP chip is the safer choice.

Ink draining too fast: Switch to 952XL cartridges. The 952XL black is rated at about 2,000 pages against 900 for the standard 952, and each XL color at about 1,450 against 630.

My cartridges worked yesterday and now the printer rejects them. Why?

HP lists the 8730, a sibling in the same 8700 series, as a dynamic-security printer, and the 8715 shares its platform. Firmware updates, including one in April 2021, have blocked cartridges with non-HP chips that worked before, and HP offers no way to roll an update back. Cartridges that keep the original HP chip are the safer choice.

Why do some sites say a 952 black prints 1,000 pages and others 900?

HP's 2016 datasheet said about 1,000 pages for the black and 700 per color. HP's current figures are 900 black and 630 per color for standard 952 cartridges.

I bought my 8715 in Europe. Do U.S. 952 cartridges work?

No. The European 8715 (K7S37A) takes HP 953 cartridges, and HP cartridges are region-coded, so they won't work across regions. Buy cartridges for the region the printer came from.

It says there's a printhead problem. Is it worth fixing?

Printhead errors are among the most common failures HP Community members report on the 8710 family. If cleaning and restarting don't clear it, a repair usually costs more than a discontinued printer like this is worth.

OfficeJet Pro 8715 quirks worth knowing

  • The 8715 was a warehouse-club version of the OfficeJet Pro 8710: same 22/18 pages-a-minute engine, 2.65-inch touchscreen, 50-sheet document feeder and 250-sheet tray. Costco listed it at $109.97 in 2019.
  • It is rated for up to 30,000 pages a month, which is a lot for a printer with a 2.65-inch screen.
  • The output tray can't be folded away, so finished pages sit out on the tray.
  • The 8700 series was named in HP's 2023 settlement with Euroconsumers over Dynamic Security cartridge blocking in Belgium, Italy, Spain and Portugal.

Will HP 950XL or 951XL cartridges work in the 8715?
No. HP 950/951 are for the older OfficeJet Pro 8100, 8600, 8610, 8620 and 8630 and the 251dw and 276dw. The 8715 takes HP 952 or 952XL.

Which of your 952XL cartridges should I buy for the 8715?
