Quick answer: The Brother HL-L2325DW uses Brother TN730 (standard, ~1,200 pages) or Brother TN760 (high-yield, ~3,000 pages) black toner, plus a separate DR730 drum unit (~12,000 pages). It does not use the older TN660. For most owners the TN760 high-yield toner is the one to buy.

Discontinued. Brother lists the HL-L2325DW as discontinued and names no direct successor. The similar models it suggests, such as the HL-L2460DW, use the newer TN830 toner.

Brother HL-L2325DW Toner at a Glance
| Supply | Type | Approx. Page Yield |
|---|---|---|
| Brother TN730 | Black toner (standard) | ~1,200 pages |
| Brother TN760 | Black toner (high-yield) | ~3,000 pages |
| Brother DR730 | Drum unit (separate) | ~12,000 pages |
The HL-L2325DW is a compact, print-only monochrome laser with automatic two-sided printing, a 250-sheet paper tray, and Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct and USB connections. Brother has discontinued it, but it shares its supplies with the best-selling HL-L2350DW family, so toner and drums are easy to find and inexpensive.
A new HL-L2325DW ships with a starter toner of about 700 pages — less than a quarter of a TN760 — so the first low-toner warning often arrives within weeks. Order a replacement early.
TN660 vs. TN760: The model number looks like the older HL-L2300D/HL-L2340DW, which use TN630/TN660 — but the HL-L2325DW belongs to the newer generation and takes TN730/TN760. The two cartridges are not interchangeable.
Standard vs. High-Yield: Which Should You Buy?
Buy the TN760. It is the same size as the TN730 and installs identically, but holds about 2.5 times as much toner for much less than 2.5 times the price. Toner doesn't dry out like ink, so even light users come out ahead. Compare cost per page in our printer ink cost calculator.
Don't Forget the DR730 Drum Unit
The Brother HL-L2325DW uses a two-piece system: the toner cartridge holds the powder, and a separate DR730 drum unit transfers it onto the paper. The drum is rated for about 12,000 pages — roughly four TN760 cartridges — so you do not replace it with every toner change. When the printer asks for toner, the drum is usually fine; when it asks for a drum, your toner is usually fine.
Signs the drum is wearing out: dots or marks that repeat at the same spacing down the page, a light gray background, or streaks that a new toner cartridge does not fix. Castle Ink stocks a compatible DR730 drum unit. After installing a new drum, reset the drum counter (see the steps below) — the printer does not do it automatically.
How to Replace the Toner
- Open the front cover and wait for the printer to stop moving.
- Pull out the toner-and-drum assembly as one piece.
- Push down the green lock lever and lift the old toner cartridge out of the drum unit.
- Gently rock the new TN760 side to side a few times, remove the orange protective cover, and slide it into the drum unit until it clicks and the green lever lifts.
- Slide the green tab on the drum unit from left to right several times to clean the corona wire, then return it to its home position (the ▲ mark).
- Reinstall the assembly and close the front cover. The toner counter resets automatically when a new cartridge is detected.
Resetting the drum counter after a drum change: do this only after you install a new DR730. With the printer on and the front cover closed, press OK and the Up arrow together, press OK to select Drum, then press the Down arrow to reset.
Troubleshooting Tips
"Replace Toner" but prints look fine: Brother printers stop at a page estimate, not when the toner is truly empty. More options in how to reset a Brother toner cartridge.
"Toner Error" or "Cartridge not detected" with a new cartridge: Make sure the toner clicked fully into the drum, remove any leftover packing material, and that the cartridge is sold for the North American market. Power off, open and close the front cover, then power back on. See printer says cartridge not recognized.
Vertical white or black lines: Clean the corona wire with the green slider on the drum. If a line stays in exactly the same place, the drum is worn.
Faded print: Rock the toner cartridge side to side to redistribute the powder; if fading returns quickly the cartridge is near empty. See printer printing faded text.
Which Other Printers Use TN730 / TN760?
The same TN730/TN760 toner and DR730 drum fit the Brother HL-L2350DW, HL-L2370DW, HL-L2390DW, HL-L2395DW, DCP-L2550DW, MFC-L2710DW, MFC-L2730DW, MFC-L2750DW, MFC-L2690DW and MFC-L2717DW. One spare cartridge can cover every one of these machines in your home or office.
What HL-L2325DW owners ask
These are the questions that come up most for this printer on retailer Q&A pages, Brother's support pages and owner reviews, answered in our words.
I put in a new DR730 and it still says Replace Drum. How do I clear it?
Reset the drum counter. With the printer on and the front cover closed, press OK and the Up arrow together, press OK to select Drum, then press the Down arrow. Only do this after installing a new drum.
Can I plug it into my router with a network cable?
No. It has Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct and USB only. The HL-L2370DW is the sibling with a wired network port.
Does a new printer come with a full toner?
No. It ships with a starter toner of about 700 pages and a DR730 drum rated for about 12,000 pages.
How do I stretch the toner?
Turn on Toner Save under General Setup > Ecology > Toner Save. Prints come out lighter, and Brother advises against it for photos or grayscale images.
Can it print envelopes or labels?
Yes, through the single-sheet manual feed slot. It takes envelopes, labels and custom sizes from 3 x 5 in to 8.5 x 14 in, on paper up to 61 lb bond.
HL-L2325DW quirks worth knowing
- Its drum reset ends with the Down arrow (OK + Up, select Drum, then Down). The MFC-L2690DW and MFC-L2717DW finish with Up instead, so instructions for those models won't work here.
- Brother's own TN760 page leaves the HL-L2325DW off its compatibility list, but the printer's product page names TN730 and TN760 as its supplies.
- A "Drum !" message usually means the corona wire needs cleaning with the green slider, or the drum assembly isn't seated right. It doesn't usually mean the drum is worn out.
- It only speaks Brother's GDI language (no PCL or PostScript), so it needs Brother's drivers or AirPrint/Mopria. It also prints two-sided by default, and the 26 ppm rating applies only after you switch to one-sided.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Brother HL-L2325DW use TN660?
No. TN660 is for the older HL-L2300D/HL-L2340DW generation. The HL-L2325DW uses TN730 or TN760.
Do I need to replace the drum when I replace the toner?
No. The DR730 drum lasts about 12,000 pages, roughly four TN760 cartridges.
Will the TN770 fit the HL-L2325DW?
Brother lists the super-high-yield TN770 only for the HL-L2370DW and MFC-L2750DW (and their XL versions). The HL-L2325DW isn't on that list, so stick with TN730 or TN760.
Does a compatible toner void the Brother warranty?
No. The U.S. Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act prevents Brother from voiding your warranty just because you used third-party toner. Brother does say its warranty may not cover damage that is caused by non-Brother supplies.
