Quick answer: the Canon imageCLASS MF462dw uses Canon Cartridge 070 toner, or the high-capacity Canon 070 H. There are only those two options, and Canon lists no separate drum unit for this printer.

The families that get wrongly sold for this machine are Canon 057 / 057H, 071 / 071H and 052 / 052H. Watch 071 especially — Canon sells 070 and 071 side by side on the same page, both current, one digit apart. And 057H is easy to talk yourself into because its 10,000-page yield sits almost exactly where the 070 H's 10,200 does.

Both are Canon's own ISO ratings. The high-capacity cartridge holds more than three times the standard, which makes it the sensible default for anything past occasional use. The cartridge supplied in the box is a full 3,000-page unit rather than a half-filled starter — unusual, and worth knowing when you are working out when to reorder.

What it actually costs to run

Castle Ink's compatible 070H is $105.95 for 10,200 pages, which works out at about 1.04 cents per page. With no drum to buy separately, that is the whole running cost of the machine.

No separate drum: what that means for you

Canon lists no drum consumable for this model, and the manual has no drum replacement procedure — the toner cartridge is the only user-replaceable part. In practice that means two things. Print quality resets completely with every cartridge, so faults like grey background or repeating marks are cured by a new cartridge rather than a separate drum swap. And you pay for the imaging hardware every time, which is why separate-drum designs like Brother's TN and DR pairings work out cheaper across a machine's full life. Buy the chipped version. Canon cartridges carry a memory chip, and without one the printer reports that it cannot display the toner amount correctly. It is a warning rather than a lockout, so printing continues — but losing the gauge on a 10,200-page cartridge is a real nuisance.

About the Canon imageCLASS MF462dw

A monochrome laser all-in-one: print, scan, copy and fax at 37 pages per minute, with automatic duplex printing and a 50-sheet ADF that does one-pass two-sided scanning at up to 100 images per minute. A 250-sheet cassette plus a 100-sheet multipurpose tray, expandable to 900 sheets with Canon's optional 550-sheet cassette. The panel is a 5-inch color touchscreen, and connectivity covers Wi-Fi, USB and cloud scanning to Dropbox, Google Drive and OneDrive.

The current US retail model is the MF462dw II; the original MF462dw is discontinued. Both revisions use the same toner.

The extra money buys five pages a minute and nothing else. The LBP246dw is the print-only version — no scanner, no fax, a 5-line mono display — on the same cartridges.

Common problems on this model

Streaks, uneven print or white spots

Canon's documented first move is to take the cartridge out and shake it five or six times to redistribute the toner, then seat it fully. Do that before you buy a replacement — it clears a good share of quality complaints on this series.

"A counterfeit or non-Canon cartridge may be in use"

The printer could not read a cartridge chip. Printing continues; only the toner-level display is affected. A chipped compatible avoids the message.

Printing works but scanning does not

Locked out by a Department ID

If the machine asks for a Department ID and PIN you did not set, it was configured with Department ID Management enabled. That is an administrator setting rather than a fault, and it appears often enough in Canon's own FAQ list to be worth knowing about.
