What Toner Does the Canon imageCLASS MF465dw Use?
Last Updated:Quick answer: the Canon imageCLASS MF465dw uses Canon Cartridge 070 toner, or the high-capacity Canon 070 H. Those are the only two options, and there is no separate drum unit to buy — Canon lists no drum consumable for this printer at all.
The wrong answers to watch for are Canon 057 / 057H, Canon 071 / 071H and Canon 052 / 052H. The 071 is the dangerous one: Canon sells it right alongside 070 on the same page, one digit apart, and both are current. The 057H is a close second because its 10,000-page yield is nearly identical to the 070 H's 10,200, so the numbers look interchangeable when they are not.

Both figures are Canon's own ISO ratings. The gap between the tiers is unusually large — more than three times the pages — which makes 070 H the obvious buy for anything beyond very light use.
One nice detail most guides miss: the cartridge that ships in the box is a full 3,000-page cartridge, not a half-filled starter. Canon documents this in its list of consumables, and it is unusually generous for a laser at this price.
What it actually costs to run
Castle Ink's compatible 070H is $105.95 for 10,200 pages — roughly 1.04 cents per page. Because Canon lists no separate drum for this machine, that is the entire consumable cost. There is nothing else to budget for.

All-in-one cartridge: the trade-off
Canon lists no drum unit for this model, and no drum replacement procedure appears in the manual — the only user-replaceable consumable is the toner cartridge. The upside is simplicity: one part number, nothing else to track, and print quality resets completely with every cartridge. The downside is that you pay for the imaging hardware every time you replace toner.

The chip matters here. Canon cartridges carry a memory chip, and with a chipless cartridge the printer displays a message saying the toner amount cannot be shown correctly. It is a warning rather than a lockout — printing continues — but it means you lose the toner gauge, which on a 10,200-page cartridge is genuinely inconvenient. We stock the chipped version for that reason.
We do not currently carry the standard-yield Canon 070. On a 3,000-page cartridge the economics rarely make sense next to the 070H.
About the Canon imageCLASS MF465dw
A monochrome laser all-in-one: print, scan, copy and fax at 42 pages per minute, with automatic duplex printing and a 50-sheet ADF that does one-pass two-sided scanning at up to 100 images per minute. Paper capacity is a 250-sheet cassette plus a 100-sheet multipurpose tray, expandable to 900 sheets with Canon's optional 550-sheet cassette.
The control panel is a 5-inch color touchscreen. Connectivity covers gigabit Ethernet, Wi-Fi, USB and a front USB port, plus direct scanning to Dropbox, Google Drive and OneDrive. Canon rates it for 750 to 4,000 pages a month.
Note that the current US retail model is the MF465dw II — the original MF465dw is discontinued. Both revisions take the same 070 and 070 H toner, so it makes no difference to what you buy.
Two nearby models share the same cartridges: the MF462dw is the same machine at 37 ppm instead of 42, and the LBP246dw is the print-only version with no scanner and a 5-line mono display.
Common problems on this model
Streaks, uneven print or white spots
Canon's documented first step is to remove the toner cartridge and shake it five or six times to redistribute the toner, then reinstall it fully. Try that before buying anything — it resolves a surprising share of quality complaints on this series.
"A counterfeit or non-Canon cartridge may be in use"
This appears when the printer cannot read a cartridge chip. It is a warning, not a block: printing continues, but the toner level stops reporting accurately. A chipped compatible cartridge avoids it entirely.
Scanning fails while printing still works
