What Ink Does the Epson Artisan 1430 Use?

Quick answer: The Epson Artisan 1430 uses six Epson 79 cartridges: black, cyan, magenta, yellow, light cyan and light magenta. Castle Ink stocks remanufactured Epson 79 Black, Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Light Cyan and Light Magenta, plus a 6-color set.

In the U.S., the only other printer that takes Epson 79 is the Stylus Photo 1400, which the Artisan 1430 replaced. Don't confuse it with Epson 78, which is for printers such as the Stylus Photo RX580, RX595 and R260. Epson's own replacement for the 1430 is the Expression Photo HD XP-15000.

How Do I Replace the Ink in the Epson Artisan 1430?

  1. Make sure the CD/DVD tray isn't inserted and the power light is on, not flashing. Open the printer cover.
  2. Press the ink button. The print head moves to the replacement position.
  3. Open the cartridge cover, squeeze the tab at the back of the old cartridge and lift it straight out.
  4. Unpack the new cartridge and remove only the yellow tape, without touching the green chip. Push it down until it clicks.
  5. Close both covers and press the ink button again. Ink charging takes about two minutes; don't turn the printer off while the light flashes.

Which Other Printers Use Epson 79?

What Artisan 1430 owners ask

These are the questions that come up most for this printer in Epson's support pages, Best Buy reviews and repair guides, answered in our words.

My prints have streaks or missing lines.

The dye inks dry in the print head when the printer sits unused. Run a nozzle check and head cleaning from the driver, repeat if needed, and print something every week or so.

It doesn't recognize a new cartridge.

Take it out and push it back in until it clicks. Check that the yellow tape is off and the chip is clean. If it still isn't recognized, try another cartridge.

It says parts inside are at the end of their service life.

The waste ink pads are full. Repair guides say the printer needs Epson service, or a pad replacement and counter reset, before it will print again.

The Wi-Fi connection is unreliable.

At least one Best Buy reviewer reports this. The printer has no Ethernet port, so USB is the fallback.

Artisan 1430 quirks worth knowing

  • It prints on inkjet-printable CDs and DVDs with the included tray.
  • There's no screen, just buttons, and the tray holds 100 plain or 20 glossy photo sheets.
