What Ink Does the HP DeskJet 4158e Use?

Quick answer: The HP DeskJet 4158e uses HP 67 ink — one black and one tri-color cartridge. The high-yield HP 67XL cartridges (HP 67XL Black (3YM57AN) and HP 67XL Tri-Color (3YM58AN)) print about twice as many pages, so XL is the one to buy.

HP DeskJet 4158e Ink Cartridges at a Glance

Cartridge Part Number Color Approx. Page Yield
HP 67 Black 3YM56AN Black ~120 pages
HP 67 Tri-Color 3YM55AN Cyan / Magenta / Yellow ~100 pages
HP 67XL Black 3YM57AN Black ~240 pages
HP 67XL Tri-Color 3YM58AN Cyan / Magenta / Yellow ~200 pages

The DeskJet 4158e is part of HP's DeskJet 4100e series, alongside the DeskJet 4155e and 4152e. It is a two-cartridge printer: the tri-color cartridge holds cyan, magenta and yellow in one unit, so when one color runs dry you replace the whole cartridge.

It is a home all-in-one — print, scan, copy and mobile fax through HP Smart — with a 35-sheet automatic document feeder, a 60-sheet input tray and dual-band Wi-Fi. HP rates it at about 8.5 pages per minute in black and 5.5 in color.

The same HP 67 / 67XL cartridges also fit the DeskJet 2700 series (2752e, 2755e, 2734e), the DeskJet Plus 4100 series and the ENVY 6000 and 6400 series. Do not confuse HP 67 with HP 65 or the newer HP 68 — they will not fit the 4158e.

Before You Buy: HP+ and the HP DeskJet 4158e

The "e" in the model name means the HP DeskJet 4158e was sold as an HP+-eligible printer. If HP+ was activated during setup, HP's terms require Original HP cartridges for the life of the printer, plus an HP account and an internet connection. Third-party cartridges — ours or anyone else's — will not work in an HP+ enrolled printer, and there is no published way to undo it. If HP+ was declined at setup, the printer behaves like a normal printer and compatible or remanufactured cartridges work. Not sure? Look for HP+ branding in the HP Smart app or on the printer's information page. Buying used? Ask the seller before you stock up on ink.

Save on HP 67XL

Castle Ink's remanufactured HP 67XL Black (3YM57AN) and HP 67XL Tri-Color (3YM58AN) — or the HP 67XL black + tri-color 2-pack — cost a fraction of genuine HP XL. Every cartridge is tested, backed by a 1-year guarantee, and ships free on orders over $50. If you print checks, we also carry an HP 67XL Black MICR cartridge. How to Replace Ink in the HP DeskJet 4158e

  1. Turn the printer on and open the ink cartridge access door. Wait for the carriage to move to the center and stop.
  2. Press down lightly on the cartridge you are replacing to release it, then pull it toward you. Tri-color sits on the left, black on the right.
  3. Unpack the new cartridge and pull off the plastic tape by its tab. Do not touch the copper contacts or the nozzles.
  4. Slide the cartridge into its slot at a slight upward angle and push it forward until it snaps into place.
  5. Close the door. Print and scan the alignment page if the printer or HP Smart asks for it.

Troubleshooting Tips

"Cartridge problem" or "incompatible cartridge": Check HP+ enrollment first. If it is not HP+, wipe the copper contacts with a lint-free cloth dampened with distilled water, let them dry, and reseat the cartridge firmly. After a firmware update, see how to keep HP firmware updates from blocking your ink.

Streaks or missing colors: Run "Clean Printheads" from HP Smart. The printhead is built into each cartridge, so if one or two cleanings do not fix it, the cartridge is the likely culprit.

Low-ink warning on a brand-new printer: The in-box cartridges are lower-capacity setup cartridges. An early warning is normal.

Bottom Line

The HP DeskJet 4158e runs on HP 67, and HP 67XL is the sensible buy — it doubles the page count and costs far less per page. Check your HP+ status, then order a black and a tri-color together so you are never stuck with one empty cartridge.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the DeskJet 4158e use HP 67 or HP 65?
HP 67. HP 65 belongs to the DeskJet 2600 and 3700 series and will not fit.

Can I print with only one cartridge?
Yes. Single-cartridge mode keeps the printer going with only black or only tri-color installed, but print quality and speed drop.

Is the 4158e ink the same as the 4155e?
Yes. Every DeskJet 4100e model takes HP 67 / 67XL.

Does using compatible or remanufactured cartridges void my warranty?
No. Under the U.S. Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, a manufacturer cannot void your printer warranty only because you used third-party cartridges. Damage proven to be caused by a specific cartridge would not be covered, but the rest of the warranty still applies.

How are these page yields measured?
They are approximate figures based on HP's ISO/IEC 24711 testing. Real results depend on what you print, how often, and how much color is on the page.
