What Ink Does the HP DeskJet 4152e Use?

Correction (October 2026): an earlier version of this guide said a "Non-HP cartridge" warning can be cleared by clicking OK, and that declining HP+, cancelling Instant Ink or turning off firmware updates lets any compatible HP 67XL work. HP says the 4152e uses dynamic security, so cartridges with a non-HP chip may not work or may stop working, with or without HP+. HP+ itself requires Original HP ink for the life of the printer.

The HP DeskJet 4152e all-in-one printer uses HP 67 or HP 67XL ink cartridges. The 67 series ships in a black cartridge and a tri-color cartridge, with XL versions rated for about 240 pages (black) and 200 pages (tri-color). It is eligible for HP+ and Instant Ink.

How to Replace Ink in the HP DeskJet 4152e

1. Power the printer on and open the front cartridge access door.
2. Wait for the carriage to slide to the center.
3. Press down lightly on the old cartridge to release it, then pull it straight out.
4. Remove the protective tape from the new cartridge and slide it in until it clicks.
5. Close the door and let the printer run its short alignment routine.

Troubleshooting Tips

"Cartridge problem" alert: Reseat each cartridge and wipe the gold contacts with a lint-free cloth.

Streaky prints: Open HP Smart and run Clean Printheads. Repeat once if streaks persist.

Alignment off: After installing a new cartridge, print an alignment page from the HP Smart app.

Blocked cartridges: The 4152e uses HP dynamic security whether or not HP+ is on. HP says cartridges with a non-HP chip may not work or may stop working, and a firmware update can block cartridges that worked before. If HP+ was turned on at setup, only Original HP cartridges will work for the life of the printer. Without HP+, remanufactured cartridges that keep the original HP chip are the safer choice.

Not necessarily. HP says the 4152e is a dynamic-security printer, so cartridges with a non-HP chip may not work, or may stop working after a firmware update, whether or not HP+ is on. Remanufactured cartridges that keep the original HP chip, like ours, are the safer choice.

Can I use remanufactured ink if HP+ is turned on?

No. HP+ needs an HP account and an internet connection, and it requires Original HP ink cartridges for the life of the printer. Cancelling Instant Ink doesn't change that, because Instant Ink is a separate, optional subscription.

Is the 4152e different from the 4155e or 4158e?

Not in any way we could find. RTINGS reviews the 4133e, 4152e, 4155e and 4158e as one printer.

My printer shows E0 or E4. What do I do?

HP's support forum points 4152e owners to its E0 guide, which covers cartridge problems, and its E4 guide, which covers paper jams. Start by reseating both cartridges, or by clearing any paper caught in the printer.

DeskJet 4152e quirks worth knowing

• Unusually for a budget DeskJet, it has an automatic document feeder. HP's listing for the identical 4155e puts it at 35 sheets.
• The feeder takes legal-size originals (8.5 x 14 in), but the flatbed glass only fits letter or A4.
• The "fax" in HP's description is mobile fax through the HP Smart app. There is no fax modem, and two-sided printing is manual.
• Its successor, the DeskJet 4255e, keeps the same design, but RTINGS notes it uses lower-yield cartridges and drops text-searchable PDF scanning.
