Quick answer: The HP DeskJet 4227e uses HP 67 ink: one black and one tri-color cartridge. The standard HP 67 black (3YM56AN) prints about 120 pages and the tri-color (3YM55AN) about 100; the high-yield HP 67XL black (3YM57AN) and tri-color (3YM58AN) print about 240 and 200 pages. Before You Buy: HP+ and the DeskJet 4227e
If HP+ was activated during setup, HP's terms require Original HP cartridges, an HP account and an internet connection for the life of the printer. Third-party cartridges will not work, and HP offers no published way to undo it. If HP+ was declined, the printer behaves normally and remanufactured cartridges work. To check, look for HP+ in the HP Smart app or on the printer's information page. Even without HP+, turn off automatic firmware updates, since HP updates have blocked third-party chips before.
How Do I Replace Ink in the DeskJet 4227e?
- Turn the printer on and open the ink access door; wait for the carriage to stop.
- Press down on the cartridge to release it and pull it toward you. Tri-color is on the left, black on the right.
- Unpack the new cartridge and pull off the plastic tape. Don't touch the copper contacts.
- Slide it into its slot at a slight upward angle until it clicks.
- Close the door and run the alignment if the printer asks.
