What Ink Does the HP DeskJet Plus 4155 Use?
Last Updated:Quick answer: the HP DeskJet Plus 4155 uses HP 67 ink — a two-cartridge setup with a pigment black and a dye tri-color. The high-yield versions are the HP 67XL black and tri-color, and they are the only ones worth buying for most people.
If you have been told this printer takes HP 63, HP 65 or the new combined HP 63/65 cartridge, that is wrong, and it is the most common ink-buying mistake on this model. Since July 2026 HP sells HP 63 and HP 65 as a single HP 63/65 line for printers such as the DeskJet 2655 and 3755. None of them fit the 4155.

Those yields are HP's own ISO figures. They are low — that is not a misprint. A two-cartridge printer at this price point is built to be cheap to buy, not cheap to feed, which is exactly why the XL versions matter so much here.
HP 67 vs 67XL: is the XL worth it?
Yes, essentially always. The XL black prints roughly twice the pages of the standard for nowhere near twice the price, and the same is true of the tri-color. The standard cartridges exist mainly so the printer can ship with something inside it.
The practical rule: if you print more than a page or two a month, buy XL. If you print so rarely that ink dries out before you finish a cartridge, still buy XL — and print a test page every couple of weeks to keep the nozzles clear. Our guide to whether ink cartridges dry out covers why.
About the HP DeskJet Plus 4155
The DeskJet Plus 4155 is the non-"e" sibling of the widely sold 4155e, and it is worth being precise about the name: HP never sold a plain "DeskJet 4155". If your printer says DeskJet Plus 4155 on the front, this is your page.
It adds a 35-sheet automatic document feeder over the smaller DeskJet models, which makes multi-page copying and scanning far less tedious. Speeds are around 8.5 ppm black and 5.5 ppm color. No automatic duplex, no fax.
One more thing worth knowing: HP has discontinued the HP DeskJet Plus 4155 itself. The printer keeps working and HP 67 ink is still widely made, so there is no urgency — but it does mean this is a machine to keep running rather than a platform to invest in.
Common problems on this model
"Cartridge problem" or "non-genuine cartridge"
Remove the cartridge, wipe the copper contacts with a dry lint-free cloth, and click it firmly back in until it stops. Then power-cycle: off, unplug at the wall for 60 seconds, back on. That clears most seating problems. It won't help with a cartridge that carries a non-HP chip: HP says the 4155 uses dynamic security to block those and updates its firmware to keep the block working. Streaky or missing lines
Run a printhead cleaning from HP Smart or the printer's own tools menu, then print a test page. Two cleaning cycles is the sensible limit — each one uses ink, and a third rarely fixes what the second did not. See faded or streaky prints.
Prints only in black, or only in color
This printer supports single-cartridge mode, so it will keep going with one cartridge installed. Print quality drops, so treat it as a stopgap, not a saving.
