What Ink Does the HP ENVY 6020e Use?
Last Updated:Correction (October 2026): an earlier version of this guide listed an HP 67XXL black (3YM59AN) as a U.S. cartridge and said the ENVY 6100 series uses HP 67. HP's 67XXL black appears only as an Asia-Pacific part (3YM59AA), and the ENVY 6100e series uses HP 68.
Quick answer: the HP ENVY 6020e uses HP 67 ink — a two-cartridge setup with a pigment black and a dye tri-color. The high-yield versions are the HP 67XL black and tri-color, and they are the only ones worth buying for most people.
HP 65, HP 63 and the combined HP 63/65 cartridges HP introduced in July 2026 do not fit this printer. HP 65 belongs to printers such as the DeskJet 2600 and 3700, and HP 63 to models such as the DeskJet 3630 and OfficeJet 3830.

Those yields are HP's own ISO figures. They are low — that is not a misprint. A two-cartridge printer at this price point is built to be cheap to buy, not cheap to feed, which is exactly why the XL versions matter so much here.
HP 67 vs 67XL: is the XL worth it?
Yes, essentially always. The XL black prints roughly twice the pages of the standard for nowhere near twice the price, and the same is true of the tri-color. The standard cartridges exist mainly so the printer can ship with something inside it.
The practical rule: if you print more than a page or two a month, buy XL. If you print so rarely that ink dries out before you finish a cartridge, still buy XL — and print a test page every couple of weeks to keep the nozzles clear. Our guide to whether ink cartridges dry out covers why.
About the HP ENVY 6020e
The ENVY 6020e is a compact home all-in-one from the ENVY 6000e family, like the 6055e and 6075e: print, scan, copy, automatic duplex, and a two-cartridge HP 67 ink system. The ENVY 6455e also uses HP 67. The similar-sounding ENVY 6100e series (such as the 6155e) uses HP 68.
Around 10 ppm black and 7 ppm color, 100-sheet input tray, dual-band Wi-Fi with AirPrint and Mopria. Flatbed scanner, no ADF. Faxing is send-only, through the mobile fax in the HP Smart app.
One more thing worth knowing: the ENVY 6020e no longer appears in HP's U.S. store. The printer keeps working and HP 67 ink is still widely made, so there is no urgency — but it does mean this is a machine to keep running rather than a platform to invest in.
Common problems on this model
"Cartridge problem" or "non-genuine cartridge"
Remove the cartridge, wipe the copper contacts with a dry lint-free cloth, and click it firmly back in until it stops. Then power-cycle: off, unplug at the wall for 60 seconds, back on. That clears many of these errors. If the message says the cartridge is non-HP or incompatible, the likely cause is HP's dynamic security: the 6020e can reject cartridges with non-HP chips whether or not HP+ is on, and HP says firmware updates can block cartridges that worked before. Streaky or missing lines
Run a printhead cleaning from HP Smart or the printer's own tools menu, then print a test page. Two cleaning cycles is the sensible limit — each one uses ink, and a third rarely fixes what the second did not. See faded or streaky prints.
Prints only in black, or only in color
This printer supports single-cartridge mode, so it will keep going with one cartridge installed. Quality drops and color is simulated from black — treat it as a stopgap, not a saving.

My printer came from Europe. Can I use HP 67 in it?
Probably not. HP's European spec sheet and an HP Community moderator say the ENVY 6020 sold there takes HP 305. Units sold in the Americas and Australia take HP 67. Check the number on the installed cartridge.
Can the ENVY 6020e send a fax?
Only through HP's send-only mobile fax in the HP Smart app. There is no phone-line fax modem and no fax memory.
Does it print on both sides automatically?
Yes. HP lists automatic two-sided printing as standard. Scanning is flatbed only, with no document feeder.
How many pages should an HP 67XL last?
HP rates the 67XL black at about 240 pages and the 67XL tri-color at about 200, double the standard cartridges' 120 and 100.
ENVY 6020e quirks worth knowing
- It is a light-duty machine. HP rates it for up to 1,000 pages a month, with a 100-sheet input tray and a 25-sheet output tray.
- It has Bluetooth 4.2, used for setup, alongside Wi-Fi and USB 2.0.
- HP 67 and the European HP 305 carry the same ratings (120/100 standard, 240/200 XL), but they are different cartridges and are not interchangeable.

Does the HP ENVY 6020e use HP 65 ink?
No. HP 65 belongs to the DeskJet 2600 and 3700 series. It is a different physical cartridge and will not seat correctly. The combined HP 63/65 cartridges HP launched in July 2026 don't fit either.
Can I use compatible HP 67 cartridges?
It depends on two things. If you turned on HP+ during setup, HP requires Original HP ink for the life of the printer. Without HP+, the printer's dynamic security can still reject cartridges with non-HP chips, so choose remanufactured cartridges that keep the original HP chip, like our remanufactured HP 67XL.
