What Ink Does the HP Envy 6065e Use?

Correction (October 2026): an earlier version of this guide said HP gives you seven days after activation to opt out of HP+, and listed an HP 67XXL black cartridge. HP only lets you skip HP+ during setup, and we found no HP 67XXL sold in the U.S.

The HP Envy 6065e uses HP 67 and HP 67XL ink cartridges — one black and one tri-color. It belongs to HP's ENVY 6000e family with the 6055e. The ENVY 6455e, from HP's separate 6400e series, takes the same two cartridges.

HP Envy 6065e Ink Cartridges at a Glance

Yields are the manufacturer's published estimates at roughly 5% page coverage — a normal text page. Photos, graphics and heavy colour fills will use considerably more than that, so treat these as a planning number rather than a promise.

Duplex printing is the detail worth knowing on the 6065e. It prints both sides automatically, which saves paper. It doesn't stretch the ink, though: each printed side uses ink, so plan on cartridge yields per side.

HP+ and the HP Envy 6065e

The HP Envy 6065e is an HP+ eligible printer. If you accepted HP+ during setup, the printer is locked to Original HP cartridges for its lifetime and will reject compatible ink outright. HP lets you skip HP+ during setup on the ENVY 6000e series, but an HP Community expert says it can't be undone once enabled.

If you are not sure which state your printer is in, open the HP Smart app and look at the printer's details — an HP+ printer is labelled as such. Even without HP+, the printer uses HP dynamic security, which blocks cartridges with non-HP chips, and HP warns that a firmware update can block cartridges that worked before. Cartridges that reuse the original HP chip, like our remanufactured 67XL, are the ones HP says are intended to work.

How to Replace the Ink in the HP Envy 6065e

1. Turn the printer on — the carriage will not move to the access position if it is powered off.
2. Open the cartridge access door and wait for the carriage to slide to the centre and stop.
3. Press down on the old cartridge to release it, then pull it toward you and out.
4. Unwrap the new cartridge and peel off the protective tape. Do not touch the copper contacts or the nozzle plate.
5. Slide the new cartridge into its slot at a slight upward angle and press until it clicks firmly into place.
6. Close the door and let the printer run its alignment page. Skipping alignment is the most common cause of banding people blame on the cartridge.

Troubleshooting the HP Envy 6065e

Smudged second side on duplex jobs. The 6065e flips the sheet quickly; on heavy ink coverage the first side may still be wet. Switch the paper type to "Plain — heavy" in the driver to add a short dry pause between sides.

Print quality drops off after the printer sits unused. Print one colour page every couple of weeks. It costs almost nothing and it keeps the nozzles from drying, which is far cheaper than the deep cleaning cycles required to recover them.

The ink gauge reads low on a brand-new cartridge. Ink level reporting is an estimate, and on compatible cartridges it can read low, unknown, or not at all. Judge by print quality, not by the gauge.

Cartridges That Do Not Fit the HP Envy 6065e

These come up constantly in mistaken orders. None of them will work in an HP Envy 6065e:

• HP 65 / 65XL, including the new combined "HP 63/65" cartridges
• HP 63 / 63XL — older DeskJet and Envy models
• HP 62 / 62XL — Envy 5540 / OfficeJet 200 series
• HP 664 / 662 — international models sold outside the U.S.

I can't find the ENVY 6065e on HP's website. Is this the right guide?

Probably. We couldn't find the 6065e in HP's U.S. store or on Staples and Best Buy compatibility lists, so it may be a regional or retailer-specific version of the ENVY 6000e series. Those printers take HP 67. Check the cartridges already in your printer before you order.

HP Smart can't find my printer during Wi-Fi setup. How do I start over?

An HP forum expert's advice for the ENVY 6000e: hold Cancel (X) and Wireless together for 5 seconds to restart Wi-Fi setup, keep your phone within a few feet of the printer, and connect to a 2.4 GHz network.

What does the E0 error mean?

One or both cartridges need attention. HP's forum linked it to non-HP cartridges and suggested reseating the cartridges, cleaning their contacts, restarting, updating firmware or replacing the cartridges.

Is there an HP 67XXL for it?

Not that we could find in the U.S. Best Buy and Staples carry only HP 67 (about 120 black / 100 tri-color pages) and HP 67XL (240 / 200).

Can it send a fax?

Only through the HP Smart app. HP calls it "mobile fax," and it is send-only; there is no phone-line fax.

ENVY 6065e quirks worth knowing

• Bluetooth is used only briefly during setup and has a very short range, which is a common reason first-time setup fails.
• On the ENVY 6055e, its closest documented sibling, HP lists a 100-sheet input tray, a 25-sheet output tray, dual-band Wi-Fi and a duty cycle of up to 1,000 pages a month.
• HP warns that firmware updates on these dynamic-security printers can block cartridges that worked before. Cartridges with reused HP chips are the ones HP says are intended to keep working.
• The ENVY 6455e takes the same HP 67 cartridges, but it belongs to HP's separate ENVY 6400e series.

67XL for anyone printing weekly. The standard 67 makes sense only as an emergency spare.
