What Ink Does the HP Latex 365 Use?

Correction (October 2026): an earlier version of this guide said the Latex 365 uses four HP 831 printheads. It has six: two Cyan/Black, two Magenta/Yellow, one Light Cyan/Light Magenta and one Optimizer head, from four part numbers.

Quick answer: The HP Latex 365 uses seven HP 831 775 ml latex cartridges — Black, Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Light Cyan and Light Magenta inks plus the HP 831 Latex Optimizer. The same cartridges fit the HP Latex 360. Castle Ink carries all seven remanufactured: HP 831 Black (CZ682A), HP 831 Cyan (CZ683A), HP 831 Magenta (CZ684A), HP 831 Yellow (CZ685A), HP 831 Light Cyan (CZ686A), HP 831 Light Magenta (CZ687A) and the HP 831 Latex Optimizer (CZ706A).

Discontinued. HP ended the Latex 300 series, including the 365, in October 2024 and replaced it with the Latex 630, 700 and 800. HP 831 ink is still sold.

Every one of the seven slots must hold a cartridge for the printer to run. The Latex Optimizer is not optional — it is a clear fluid that fixes the colored inks to the media surface, so prints come out sharp on vinyl, banner and other non-porous materials.

The Latex 365 is HP's 64-inch production latex printer for signs, banners, vehicle graphics, wall coverings and textiles. It uses the same ink as the Latex 360. HP discontinued the Latex 300 series in October 2024; its replacements are the Latex 630, 700 and 800. Latex prints come out dry and ready to laminate or install, which is why shops pick latex over solvent.

HP 831 775 ml cartridges fit the whole HP Latex 300 series — the Latex 310, 315, 330, 335, 360 and 365 — plus the Latex 560, Latex 370 and Latex 570. See our HP Latex 315 and HP Latex 335 guides if you run more than one. The larger Latex 370 and Latex 570 can also run HP 871 3-liter cartridges, but they accept these same HP 831 775 ml cartridges too.

Other HP 831 Supplies

The cartridges are only part of the system. The HP Latex 365 also uses six HP 831 printheads — two Cyan/Black (CZ677A), two Magenta/Yellow (CZ678A), one Light Cyan/Light Magenta (CZ679A) and one Optimizer (CZ680A) — and an HP 831 maintenance cartridge (CZ681A). These are long-life parts you replace far less often than ink. We sell the ink, not the printheads or maintenance cartridge.

How to Replace Ink in the HP Latex 365

  1. Wait for the front panel to report an empty cartridge, or open the ink menu and choose to replace one.
  2. Open the ink cartridge drawer or cover for the color you are replacing.
  3. Pull the empty cartridge straight out.
  4. Shake the new cartridge gently a few times before installing it — ink settles while a cartridge sits on the shelf.
  5. Push the new cartridge into the slot that matches its color label until it locks, then close the cover.
  6. Check the front panel to confirm the cartridge is recognized before you start the next job.

Troubleshooting Tips

Cartridge not recognized or "non-HP cartridge" message: Reseat the cartridge firmly, and check that it is the right region version: in the Americas, HP 831 ink is the CZ682A to CZ687A set, and HP says cartridges from other regions won't work. A notice that a cartridge is not original HP is normal with remanufactured ink — accept it on the front panel to continue.

Prints smear or stay tacky: Check the Optimizer cartridge first, then confirm the curing temperature and media preset match the material. Latex ink needs the Optimizer and correct curing to set properly.

Banding or missing colors: Run the printhead cleaning and alignment routines from the front panel. If a color is still missing, check the matching HP 831 printhead and the maintenance cartridge status.

What Latex 365 owners ask

These are the questions that come up most for this printer on retailer Q&A pages, HP's support forum and owner reviews, answered in our words.

I see HP 831 and HP 831C part numbers. Which do I need?

Both are 775 ml HP 831 latex ink, but HP region-codes them and says they don't work across regions. In the Americas, buy the CZ682A to CZ687A set. Numbers such as CZ694A (831C black) are for Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

How wide and heavy a roll can it take?

One roll at a time, up to 1,625 mm (64 in.) wide, 42 kg and 250 mm in outside diameter. Media can be up to 0.5 mm thick.

How fast does it print?

HP rates it from up to 91 m² an hour in its fastest single-pass mode down to 5 m² an hour in a 20-pass mode for high-saturation textiles.

Does the CZ681A maintenance cartridge also fit a Latex 560?

Yes. An HP representative on HP's Latex community forum confirmed that CZ681A is valid for the Latex 560 as well as the 300 series.

Is the Latex 365 still made?

No. HP discontinued the Latex 300 series in October 2024 and replaced it with the Latex 630, 700 and 800 range. An HP reseller reports that parts, support and supplies continue.

Latex 365 quirks worth knowing

  • It has six printheads with 2,112 nozzles in total. The Cyan/Black and Magenta/Yellow heads are doubled, so the Light Cyan/Light Magenta and Optimizer heads have no twin.
  • HP 831 ink is sold by volume (775 ml), not page yield, so there is no honest cost-per-page figure to compare.
  • It connects by Gigabit Ethernet. HP's product number for the printer is V8L39A.
  • Retailers label the same ink as HP 831, 831A or 831C. The letter matters, because it marks the sales region.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the HP Latex 365 use HP 831 or HP 871?
HP 831 775 ml cartridges. HP 871 3-liter cartridges are an extra option only on the Latex 370 and 570, which also accept HP 831.

Is the Latex 365 ink the same as the Latex 360?
Yes. Both take the same seven HP 831 775 ml cartridges.

Can I print without the Latex Optimizer?
No. All seven cartridges, including the Optimizer, must be installed.

Do the Latex 310, 315, 330, 335, 360 and 365 share ink?
Yes. They all take the same HP 831 775 ml cartridges.

Does using remanufactured cartridges void my warranty?
No. Under the U.S. Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, a manufacturer cannot void your printer warranty only because you used third-party cartridges. Damage proven to be caused by a specific cartridge would not be covered, but the rest of the warranty still applies. Service contracts (HP Care Packs) can carry their own terms, so check yours.
