How to Replace Ink in the HP OfficeJet 5742
- Power on the printer and wait for it to be idle.
- Open the cartridge access door — the carriage will move to the center.
- Press down gently on the empty cartridge to release it, then pull it out.
- Unwrap the new cartridge and remove the protective tape — do not touch the copper contacts.
- Slide the cartridge in at a slight upward angle until it clicks, then close the door.

"Cartridge Problem" error: Remove both cartridges, wipe the copper contacts with a lint-free cloth, and reinsert firmly until they click.
Streaky or faded prints: Run the printhead cleaning tool from the printer's touchscreen or the HP software. Repeat up to three times if needed.

Yes. It has an Ethernet port as well as Wi-Fi and USB, which most newer HP home inkjets don't.
Can it fax in color and store faxes?
Yes. HP lists color fax with memory for about 100 pages, up to 99 speed dials and broadcast to 20 locations.
Can the document feeder scan both sides of a page?
No. The 25-sheet feeder scans one side. Only printing is automatically two-sided.
