What Ink Does the HP OfficeJet 8702 Use?

Quick answer: The HP OfficeJet 8702 uses four separate HP 952 cartridges: black, cyan, magenta and yellow. The high-yield HP 952XL versions fit too. Castle Ink stocks remanufactured 952XL Black, Cyan, Magenta and Yellow, plus a 4-pack with the original HP chip.

It's sold as the OfficeJet 8702, not the OfficeJet Pro 8702, but it takes the same HP 952 ink as the OfficeJet Pro 8710, 8720 and 8740. Cartridges sold for Europe carry a different number and generally won't work in a U.S. printer.

What OfficeJet 8702 owners ask

These are the questions that come up most for this printer in HP's support community and owner reviews, answered in our words.

Is my printer an OfficeJet 8702 or an OfficeJet Pro 8702?

HP's support site and Staples' compatibility list both call it the OfficeJet 8702, with no “Pro.” It uses the same HP 952 cartridges as the OfficeJet Pro 8710 and 8720.

Why does it say 'incompatible cartridges' with genuine HP ink?

One 8702 owner hit this after an automatic firmware update, and HP handled it through the owner's Instant Ink account. Instant Ink cartridges only work in a printer that's enrolled, so check your enrollment, reseat the cartridges and contact HP if it persists.

Can I keep printing with one color empty?

HP's guide says to keep all four cartridges installed to avoid print-quality problems and printhead damage, and to replace an empty one promptly.

My prints are streaky or faded. What should I try?

Check the ink levels, run Clean Printhead from the Tools menu on the touchscreen, then align the printhead.

OfficeJet 8702 quirks worth knowing

  • HP covers it in its OfficeJet 8700 series user guide, first published in April 2016.
  • It has a document feeder, automatic two-sided printing and fax with two phone ports.
  • It connects over Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct, Ethernet or USB, and a front USB port prints from flash drives.
  • HP 952 ink is pigment-based, so text resists smudging.
