What Ink Does the HP OfficeJet Pro 7720 Use?
Last Updated:Quick answer: The HP OfficeJet Pro 7720 Wide Format All-in-One uses four separate HP 952 or high-yield HP 952XL cartridges in black, cyan, magenta and yellow, and it also takes the HP 956XL extra-high-yield black. The best-value option from Castle Ink is our remanufactured 952XL 4-pack with original HP chips; we also sell a 956XL black.
The 7720 is the single-tray model in HP's 7700 wide-format line. It prints tabloid (11x17), but it only scans up to legal size.

HP OfficeJet Pro 7720
| Pillar (weight) | Score | What it is based on |
|---|---|---|
| Owner ratings (28%) | — | Not enough current retailer ratings to use: Best Buy shows 68 reviews (96% recommend) but no average. |
| Expert reviews (18%) | — | Reviewed by Tom's Guide and TechRadar, but no numeric score we could verify. |
| Cost per page (24%) | 79 | About 3.9¢ per page blended (black + color) with our remanufactured 952XL (2,000 black / 1,450 color pages). Docked because the printer can reject cartridges without the maker's chip. |
| Reliability (13%) | 72 | Most-reported problems: paper pickup 'paper problem' errors; carriage jams with no paper present; firmware rejecting aftermarket cartridges |
| Features (12%) | 94 | Print up to 11x17, copy, scan (to legal size), document feeder, auto two-sided printing, fax, Wi-Fi, Ethernet, touchscreen, fast (20+ ppm). |
| Value (5%) | 78 | Tabloid printing and running cost |
Limited data: We could find neither enough owner ratings nor a numeric expert score for the 7720, so we cap it at 69 (Situational) under our methodology. On running cost and features alone it would score about 81.
Discontinued. HP lists the 7720 as discontinued. HP's current wide-format all-in-one is the OfficeJet Pro 9730e, which uses HP 936 cartridges, though HP hasn't called it the 7720's replacement.
CastleScore is Castle Ink’s own editorial rating, built from retailer star ratings, expert reviews, real cost per page and owner complaint patterns, checked October 14, 2026. It is not a customer review. See every ranked printer or how the score works.

Our own remanufactured cartridges. HP's printer page and cartridge pages give different 952XL color yields (1,600 vs 1,450 pages); we use the current cartridge-page figure.
What Ink Cartridges Does the HP OfficeJet Pro 7720 Take?
| Cartridge | HP part no. (standard / XL) | Approx. yield (standard / XL) | Castle Ink option |
|---|---|---|---|
| HP 952 Black | F6U15AN / F6U19AN | ~1,000 / ~2,000 pages | Remanufactured 952XL Black |
| HP 952 Cyan | — / L0S61AN | ~700 / ~1,450 pages | Remanufactured 952XL Cyan |
| HP 952 Magenta | — / L0S64AN | ~700 / ~1,450 pages | Remanufactured 952XL Magenta |
| HP 952 Yellow | — / L0S67AN | ~700 / ~1,450 pages | Remanufactured 952XL Yellow |
| HP 956XL Black | L0R39AN | ~3,000 pages | Remanufactured 956XL Black |
HP's 7720 product page still shows 1,600 pages for the 952XL colors, but its current 952XL cartridge pages say about 1,450, so we use the lower figure. The ink is pigment-based in all four colors. HP 953, 954 and 955 are the same cartridges for other regions and won't work in a U.S. printer.
Is HP 952XL Worth It?
Yes. The XL doubles the black pages and roughly doubles the colors. On October 14, 2026, Walmart listed Original HP 952XL black at $70.92 (about 3.5¢ a page). Our remanufactured 952XL singles are $29.95 each (about 1.5¢ a page for black), and the OEM-chip 4-pack is $64.95 for all four colors. If you print mostly text, the 956XL black stretches to about 3,000 pages.
Dynamic security. HP lists the 7720 as a dynamic-security printer: cartridges with non-HP chips "may not work," and owners report firmware updates locking out aftermarket cartridges. That's why we recommend the OEM-chip 4-pack for this printer, and why it's worth turning off automatic firmware updates.
How Do I Replace the Ink in the HP OfficeJet Pro 7720?

- Press the front of the cartridge to release it and pull it out.
- Unpack the new cartridge without touching the contacts.
- Slide it into the color-coded slot until it clicks.
- Close the door and run alignment if the printer asks.

What OfficeJet Pro 7720 owners ask
These are the questions that come up most for this printer on retailer Q&A pages, HP's support community and owner reviews, answered in our words.
Can it scan 11x17?
No. The flatbed and the 35-sheet document feeder both top out at legal size (8.5 x 14 in). It prints tabloid but doesn't scan it.
Can it print 11x17 on both sides automatically?
No. Automatic two-sided printing works on letter and A4 only. Tabloid pages have to be flipped by hand.
It says paper problem or won't pick up paper. What helps?
Fan the stack, set the guides snug, and clean the pickup rollers with a lint-free cloth dampened with water. Worn rollers are the usual cause on older units.
It reports a carriage jam with no paper inside. Now what?
Turn it off, open the cartridge door and look for scraps or a dislodged item in the carriage path, then move the carriage by hand to check it slides freely before powering back on.
Does it have a second paper tray?
No. The 7720 has one 250-sheet tray that handles tabloid. The 7740 adds a second 250-sheet tray.
OfficeJet Pro 7720 quirks worth knowing
- It prints borderless up to 11x17 and custom sizes up to 11.7 x 17 in.
- HP rates it at 22 pages a minute in black and 18 in color.
- It faxes in color and has Ethernet, Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Direct.
- HP recommends 250 to 1,500 pages a month; the in-box setup cartridges are rated about 1,000 pages black and 625 color.
