What Ink Does the HP OfficeJet Pro 9730e Use?

Correction (October 2026): an earlier version of this guide said that compatible or remanufactured cartridges work in the 9730e if HP+ was declined at setup. HP dynamic security applies either way: HP says the printer is intended to work only with cartridges that have a new or reused HP chip.

Quick answer: The HP OfficeJet Pro 9730e uses four HP 936 cartridges — Black, Cyan, Magenta and Yellow — with HP 936e EvoMore high-yield versions that print about twice as many pages. HP does not make an "XL" in this family, so anything sold as "HP 936XL" is a third-party cartridge.

Still sold new on HP's U.S. store as the HP+-eligible 9730e. It uses HP dynamic security whether or not HP+ is turned on.

Why there is no Castle Ink cartridge for this printer

We don't sell HP 936 or 936e replacements, so there is nothing of ours to recommend for the 9730e. It is a dynamic-security printer: HP says it is intended to work only with cartridges that have a new or reused HP chip, and firmware updates can block cartridges that worked before. We would rather not sell you a cartridge that an update could stop.

Buy Original HP 936 or 936e EvoMore. On a printer that lays down 11 x 17 pages, EvoMore means fewer swaps: about 2,500 pages for black and 1,650 per color, against 1,250 and 800 for standard 936.

The OfficeJet Pro 9730e is HP's wide-format all-in-one: it prints up to 11 x 17 in. (tabloid) and scans and copies up to 11 x 17 in. on the flatbed glass. It also has a 35-sheet automatic document feeder (for originals up to 8.5 x 14 in.) and automatic two-sided printing, including on tabloid pages. Despite the bigger pages it uses the same four HP 936 cartridges as HP's letter-size OfficeJet Pro models — wide pages simply empty them faster.

The same HP 936 / 936e cartridges fit HP's whole current OfficeJet Pro line: the OfficeJet 9122e, OfficeJet Pro 9110b, 9125e, 9128e, 9130b and 9135e, and the OfficeJet Pro Wide Format 9730e. See our HP OfficeJet Pro 9125e ink guide if you also run a letter-size model, or the HP OfficeJet Pro 9135e ink guide. Outside North America HP sells the same printers with HP 937 cartridges, which are not interchangeable with US HP 936.

Do not confuse HP 936 with HP 962 (OfficeJet Pro 9010/9020 series) or HP 910 (OfficeJet Pro 8020 series). They will not fit.

Before You Buy: HP+ and the HP OfficeJet Pro 9730e

The "e" in the model name means the HP OfficeJet Pro 9730e was sold as an HP+-eligible printer. If HP+ was activated during setup, HP's terms require Original HP cartridges for the life of the printer, plus an HP account and an internet connection. Third-party cartridges will not work in an HP+ enrolled printer, and there is no published way to undo it. Declining HP+ does not open the printer to any cartridge. The 9730e uses HP dynamic security either way: HP says it is intended to work only with cartridges that have a new or reused HP chip, and that firmware updates may block cartridges that worked before. Not sure? Look for HP+ branding in the HP Smart app or on the printer's information page. Buying used? Ask the seller before you stock up on ink.

How to Replace Ink in the HP OfficeJet Pro 9730e

  1. Open the ink cartridge access door on the front of the printer and wait for the carriage to stop.
  2. Press the front of the empty cartridge to release it, then pull it straight out.
  3. Unwrap the new cartridge. Hold it by the sides and do not touch the copper contacts.
  4. Slide it into the slot that matches its color label and press until it clicks.
  5. Close the door and let the printer finish its short calibration.

Troubleshooting Tips

Cartridge not recognized: Reseat it firmly until it clicks and wipe the chip contacts. Reseating won't help a cartridge with a non-HP chip: HP dynamic security blocks those whether or not HP+ is on, and a firmware update won't make one work.

Low-ink warning soon after setup: Normal. The in-box setup cartridges hold less ink than retail HP 936 cartridges.

Faded or streaky output: Run the Print Quality Diagnostic from the touchscreen or HP Smart, then one printhead cleaning if needed. The printhead is a permanent part of the printer, so avoid running cleaning cycles back to back — each one uses ink.

What OfficeJet Pro 9730e owners ask

These are the questions that come up most for this printer on retailer Q&A pages, HP's support forum and owner reviews, answered in our words.

Will remanufactured cartridges work if I skip HP+?

Only ones that carry a new or reused HP chip. The 9730e uses HP dynamic security whether or not HP+ is on, so cartridges with non-HP chips are blocked, and HP warns that firmware updates can block cartridges that worked before.

Can it scan 11 x 17 originals?

Yes, on the flatbed glass, which takes originals up to 11.69 x 17 in. The 35-sheet document feeder is limited to 8.5 x 14 in.

Does two-sided printing work on tabloid pages?

Yes. HP lists automatic two-sided printing up to 11 x 17 in. Some owners report jams or misfeed alerts on two-sided tabloid jobs and print one side at a time instead.

Can I keep printing black when a color cartridge is empty?

Not reliably. HP expects every cartridge to have ink, and owners report one empty color holding up color printing. HP's forum advice is to choose grayscale or black-only printing in the driver as a stopgap and replace the empty cartridge.

How much paper does it hold?

Two 250-sheet input trays, so 500 sheets in all, plus a 75-sheet output tray. It takes up to 30 envelopes.

OfficeJet Pro 9730e quirks worth knowing

  • The flatbed scans up to 11.69 x 17 in, much larger than the document feeder's 8.5 x 14 in limit. Tabloid originals have to go on the glass.
  • HP announced the 936e EvoMore cartridges as "planned to be available April 2024", after the printer was already on sale, so early owners may only have seen standard HP 936 on shelves.
  • A "critical system error" such as CE.96.20.0B is not an ink problem. HP's forum advice was a reset or firmware update, then warranty service if the error stays.
  • HP sells it as the HP+-eligible 9730e (537P6A), and business resellers also list a non-"e" OfficeJet Pro 9730 (C2WH0A).

Frequently Asked Questions

HP 936 or HP 936e?
Both fit the same slots. The 936e EvoMore is rated for about twice the pages (2,500 black and 1,650 per color, against 1,250 and 800). At the prices we found the cost per page is close, so the main gain is fewer cartridge changes.

Does the wide-format 9730e need special wide-format ink?
No. It uses the same HP 936 / 936e cartridges as the letter-size OfficeJet Pro 9125e and 9135e.

Is there an HP 936XL?
Not from HP. "936XL" listings are third-party cartridges.

Will HP 937 cartridges work?
Not in a US printer. HP 937 is the version sold outside North America, and HP regionalizes these cartridges.

Does using compatible or remanufactured cartridges void my warranty?
No. Under the U.S. Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, a manufacturer cannot void your printer warranty only because you used third-party cartridges. Damage proven to be caused by a specific cartridge would not be covered, but the rest of the warranty still applies.
